[UPDATE] Windows Central's Jez Corden has shared additional Mortal Kombat 1 details from his sources. According to Corden, the game will be a reboot featuring Peacemaker in the Character Pass. The current target for the release month is September.

[ORIGINAL STORY] Renowned leaker billbil-kun has just revealed on Twitter that Mortal Kombat 1 is the title of NetherRealm's next installment in the acclaimed fighting game series.

The leaker also shared pricing information and the supported platforms. Mortal Kombat 1 is leaving behind old consoles like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, though the Nintendo Switch is included. That likely means it will be supported via the cloud, as with other games in the past; if it was a native version, there wouldn't have been any reason not to release the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One as well.

The pricing information follows below:

The Kollector's Edition is physical only and won't be available for the Nintendo Switch.

The supposed title change is interesting because Warner Bros. Discovery previously addressed the game as Mortal Kombat 12 in an earnings call. Was that a mistake, or did the developers change their minds in the meantime?

We should know a lot more soon, as the developers have been teasing an imminent unveiling. According to the rumors, NetherRealm and Warner Bros. Games are expected to show off the new game at the upcoming PlayStation Showcase, which should take place in the week of May 25th, per Jeff Grubb's sources.

We don't really have any information about Mortal Kombat 1 yet, other than its 2023 release window and the fact it'll be supported even longer than Mortal Kombat 11, according to franchise creator Ed Boon.

The previous entry was so successful (it sold over 15 million units globally) that NetherRealm didn't go back to making another Injustice title right away. Mortal Kombat 11 earned an 8.5 out of 10 score in Wccftech's review penned by Nathan Birch:

Mortal Kombat 11 is a first-class fighting game experience, featuring rock-solid core mechanics, impressive production values, and a story that wouldn’t be out of place alongside the summer’s biggest blockbusters. Of course, the game also suffers from some of the drawbacks of big-budget game development, including grindy customization and tacked-on microtransactions, but that stuff is largely superfluous. Beneath the triple-A fat, Mortal Kombat’s bloody heart still beats as strong as ever.

Between Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat 1, and Tekken 8 on the horizon, it's certainly never been a better time to be a fighting game fan.
