Mina the Hollower is the latest game from the iconic and veteran indie team Yacht Club Games, the studio behind the Shovel Knight series, which also previously dipped a toe into publishing with the standout platformer Cyber Shadow. Though the studio had reached a 'make or break' point ahead of Mina the Hollower's release due to its extended development time and multiple delays, its launch has been an undeniable hit, as it's not only the best-reviewed game of 2026 so far, it's sold 300K copies in just three days.
The news comes from Bloomberg, who also recently spoke to Yacht Club about the game's development and the journey it took to get Mina the Hollower across the finish line. While this massive sales milestone is a big achievement for Yacht Club, just as it would be for any indie studio, sales are also not where Yacht Club had envisioned them, hoping instead for a million copies sold.
What's important though, is that studio co-founder and director Sean Velasco confirmed that the sales from Mina have already ensured the studio can continue without having to suffer layoffs or any kind of organizational restructuring. For the short-term, at least.
Mina the Hollower launched on May 29, 2026, and arrived as the best-reviewed game of 2026 so far on Metacritic, though it is now tied with Forza Horizon 6 for the top spot. It was also a game we highlighted back in June 2025 during Steam Next Fest, and made the list for our most anticipated indie titles of 2026.
"I wonder how come the best-reviewed game of 2026 is not the fastest-selling game," said Velasco, "so I feel a big fire lit to close that gap."
As challenging as it is to find success in the video game industry for all developers, not just indie teams, it's encouraging to see a veteran team like Yacht Club Games still find success, even if it's not at the scale it hoped. That said, Mina the Hollower has only been on the market for a few days, and though we don't have a review of it here at Wccftech, I can say within the short time I've spent with it that Yacht Club has not lost its knack for making excellent games.
It won't be surprising if/when it surpasses its other sales goals before the end of the year.
