Mark Zuckerberg has been bringing about some significant changes to its business strategy and focusing on increasing efficiency by stepping in varied directions. It has recently stirred quite a controversy over its changes to Facebook's fact-checking system and the transition from professional fact-checkers to now a community-driven model. It seems that Meta plans an intense year for its employees, with the CEO now announcing that it is going to cut down five percent of its workforce in an attempt to move out low performers faster.
Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg informed its employees of an intense year ahead as it is focusing on moving out its low-performing employees
Meta's CEO went with an aggressive approach at the start of the year, first by announcing changes to its fact-checking system, then bashing Apple for its lack of innovation, and now the company, as per a Bloomberg report, is going to be reducing its workforce by 5 percent based on their performance. The CEO himself shared this decision in an internal memo to the staff, in which the company shared that this decision was being made to increase the performance of its current employees and take out poor-performing employees.
Mark Zuckerberg expressed that he would be focusing on hiring new employees who are more motivated and the terminations would be performance-based. In the note issued, Zuckerberg said:
I’ve decided to raise the bar on performance management and move out low-performers faster. We typically manage out people who aren’t meeting expectations over the course of a year, but now we’re going to do more extensive performance-based cuts during this cycle.
Meta is focusing on increasing agility and moving faster towards its goals by increasing the overall efficiency of its employees. The company typically opts for year-end performance evaluation but now heads with an intense strategy that will focus more extensively on performance. The company currently employs about 72,00 people, and with the 5 percent reduction in its staff, the job cut could impact approximately 3,600 employees. It is said the affected members will be notified about the decision by February 10th.
This is not the first time Meta is letting go of a big chunk of its workforce. It made a similar decision in October and laid off about 10,000 employees in 2023. The cuts came after Meta had undergone several operational changes that many attribute to being politically driven. Decisions like these tend to significantly impact employee morale and can even have implications related to employee retention.
