The first 2nm ‘N2P’ chipsets from Qualcomm and MediaTek are scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2026, and while the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro and Dimensity 9600 Pro might share the same lithography, their pricing difference is what will determine their adoption, or lack thereof. Looking at the contrasting figures, MediaTek has an excellent opportunity to chip away at Qualcomm’s market share, as its flagship SoC is said to be 28 percent cheaper.
Dimensity 9600 Pro is rumored to be priced at $216, whereas Qualcomm could charge upwards of $300
We’ve previously reported that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro might be reserved for ultra-premium flagships because Qualcomm’s smartphone partners might not be comfortable forking over $300 per unit to use in a wide range of devices. The San Diego chipset maker has already admitted that from September 1, all of its products will become pricier by double-digit percentage points, and sadly, those changes include the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro.
Knowing that its flagship SoC sales will suffer, Qualcomm is rumored to introduce a stacked lineup of 2nm and 3nm chipsets this year to keep its business afloat. However, MediaTek’s sole advantage will be offering a cheaper Dimensity 9600 Pro, which Commercial Times says will cost $216, making it 28 percent cheaper than the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro. Phone makers have already been pushed into a corner with rising DRAM and NAND flash prices, with TSMC’s expensive 2nm wafers putting additional stress on their existing budgets.
A large portion of flagship smartphones could ship with the Dimensity 9600 Pro since marketing the 2nm process to the masses, and the benefits that come with this lithography will be easier to showcase. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro will also attempt to carve out a space for itself in this cutthroat segment, with Qualcomm attempting to impress its partners with its new in-house Oryon CPU cores, not to mention a focus on improved upscaling and frame generation.
However, when it comes to maintaining higher margins by selling devices at a competitive price range, we doubt that there’s a better alternative than using the Dimensity 9600 Pro.
