Matt Damon explains how much Apple's F1 needs to earn in the box office to become a hit

The entertainment category requires companies to have significantly deep pockets, and luckily for Apple, it is sitting on a truckload of cash, which means it has the means to go ‘all out’ concerning original content. For F1, it is estimated that the film is the technology giant’s most expensive so far, with a budget of $300 million, surpassing Killers of the Flower Moon, which was made for $215 million. With every additional dollar invested, F1 needs to gross even more to become a theatrical success, and Matt Damon sat down to provide his take on how much Apple’s original film needs to make at the box office to be considered a hit.

A movie like F1 needs to make double its production and marketing budget to be labelled a box office hit; Matt Damon suggests Apple’s most expensive film needs to gross $600 million

On a ‘Hot Ones’ episode, with the important part spotted by 9to5Mac, famous American actor and film producer Matt Damon sat down and explained that movies are not being made like they used to. When discussing F1, he estimates that the Apple Original needs to make twice its production and marketing budget at the global box office, hinting at a $600 million figure. Unfortunately, without knowing Apple’s marketing budget, which could be an enormous sum, there is no way to determine how much F1 needs to gross.

Then again, the Cupertino firm has a habit of burning through cash for its original content, with an earlier figure stating that Apple’s investments in its streaming platform have crossed a mammoth $20 billion and that it is making adjustments to ensure that the budget does not balloon further. Moreover, Apple TV+ has incurred losses of around $1 billion, but since the technology giant’s Services sector brings in a massive chunk of revenue, injecting funds into making expensive movies will likely be Apple’s usual practice. Viewing these numbers, F1 will likely be attached with a ludicrous marketing bill.

The 2025 American sports drama film is set to maintain its position at the top of box office charts as it races to $50 million in earnings, according to The Numbers. However, it has a mountain to climb if Matt Damon’s understanding is correct, and if you want to check out the entire Hot Ones episode, the clip is given up top.
