MacBook Neo display setting improves its image quality

A $599 starting price for the MacBook Neo means Apple would be cutting corners left, right, and center, with the display being the most notable victim of this strategy. In our detailed buying guide, where we compared the entry-level notebook and the M5 MacBook Air, we mentioned that the more premium option supports the wider P3 color gamut, but did you know there’s an option in the settings to enable the same feature on the MacBook Neo? Well, you’d be surprised how many hidden gems Apple is packing underneath its most affordable Mac.

Even with the P3 display option enabled, the MacBook Neo doesn’t cover the same color gamut as the more expensive M5 MacBook Air and M5 MacBook Pro

Content creator @ZONEofTECH found out that there’s a ‘Colour profile’ setting in the ‘Display’ menu of the MacBook Neo, allowing users to select the ‘Display P3’ option. While Apple hasn’t advertised or mentioned the existence of these settings, selecting them will allow you to view images under the DCI-P3 color space. If you currently own the MacBook Neo, we highly recommend choosing this option immediately.

Now, the burning question is whether Apple deliberately kept these settings hidden to undermine the MacBook Neo in an attempt to make the M5 MacBook Air and M5 MacBook Pro more appealing. Secondly, do the newer settings bring the MacBook Neo on par with the Cupertino firm’s more expensive hardware?

We cannot answer the first question with the utmost surety, but @ZONEofTECH answers the second one, saying that the $599 notebook doesn’t cover 100 percent of the P3 color space, but the wider gamut means that content and images will look more pleasing to look at, at least for those who can notice the difference.

At the end of the day, Apple may not have openly talked about the MacBook Neo’s display settings because the target market of this machine is entirely different. A $599 portable Mac isn’t targeted to creative professionals, as they will choose the M5 MacBook Air or an M5 MacBook Pro for intensive color-grading work.

If you want to view higher-quality images or video on the MacBook Neo, Amazon has the notebook in abundance, with the 256GB SSD model going for $599, with the 512GB variant listed for $699. There’s also a 1TB option, but that’s only possible through a skillful modification.
