Apple previously limited the use of its M3 MacBook Pro models to two external monitors, just as long as the machine’s lid was closed, which is also known as clamshell mode. The company has seemingly removed this barrier from the M4 MacBook Pro, as seen in the latest review, where a content creator shows that the portable Mac’s lid is opened and functional while driving two external displays at the same time.
Driving two external monitors with the lid opened on the M4 MacBook Pro might be related to the number of increased Thunderbolt controllers on the chipset
As the majority of you are aware, Apple was reportedly said to unveil a host of Macs on November 1, which included the 14-inch and 16-inch M4 MacBook Pro, along with their powerful M4 Pro and M4 Max variants. Unfortunately, a string of events caused a major leak, resulting in the base model not only getting reviewed by a Russian YouTuber but also finding its way to a marketplace listing with an eye-watering price of around $7,500.
While Apple attempts to assess the damage and alleviate future problems caused by this leak, another YouTuber, Romancev768, decided to take the M4 MacBook Pro for a spin, and in doing so, he discovered a new change that will likely aid productivity aficionados. He discovered that the latest model can drive not one but two external monitors, all the while keeping the lid of the Mac open. This functionality does not bring any limitation to the table, suggesting that Apple addressed it with the latest version.
With the M3 models, it was not possible to connect two monitors while keeping the lid open, meaning that it might have been a bandwidth-related issue. It was previously reported that the M4 has twice the number of Thunderbolt controllers as the M3, which likely allows users to hook up two external displays while letting the MacBook Pro operate in clamshell mode. This will come in handy because with the lid closed, there is no way to access the keyboard unless an external unit is carried around at all times.
Additionally, connecting a wired or wireless mouse will become mandatory because there is no way to interact with the trackpad with the lid closed either. Carrying these peripherals can become cumbersome, but thanks to the M4 MacBook Pro, that should no longer be a problem.
