The Mac mini received its major redesign recently alongside the M4 MacBook Pro models, and the machine is now significantly smaller than the previous version. While the general reviews have been positive, considering the new design and the M4 chip's performance, we hear that the USB-C port has a connectivity issue, creating a hurdle for users and their workflow.
Apple's M4 Mac mini features USB-C connectivity issues, as it disconnects randomly
As mentioned, a small number of users are having issues with the USB-C connectivity on their new M4 Mac mini, according to AppleInsider. We have to consider that USB-C technology has been around for a while, and many devices use it, including smartphones, laptops, and additional peripherals; it rarely causes issues. However, several reports have emerged that aim to reflect connectivity problems with the new machine, and it remains to be seen what Apple will have to say.
Various posts have been discovered on different platforms that highlight USB-C connectivity issues on the new M4 Mac mini. A user on Reddit recently posted that the USB-C on the M4 Mac mini "intermittently disconnects," which requires him to manually disconnect and reconnect the accessory. The user also tried the same accessory on his other Macs, and to his surprise, the connectivity issue only came up on the M4 Mac mini.
Other users have also shared that they were encountering the same connectivity issue for docks through the USB 3, along with a KWM switch not working with the port. They also sorted into the same manual disconnect and reconnect solution, after which everything worked as intended. Another user pointed out that the issue persisted for him through the rear ports, and the front ports continued to work as they should.
A user posted in December last year that he was also having power issues with USB-C devices. He connected an external hard drive through USB-C, and it disconnected after an "I/O heavy" task, despite the fact that it was connected directly. Other users also claim that the hubs do not work as well on the M4 Mac mini, and there have been various concerns about whether the issue rests with the rear or front USB-C ports.
It remains to be seen if Apple acknowledges the issue and releases a fix. More importantly, it is unclear if the problem rests at a hardware or software level. If it is a software error, Apple will potentially release a fix with its forthcoming macOS 15 updates. We will share more details on the issue if Apple has taken note of the scene, so be sure to stick around, but putting the connectivity issues on the side, the M4 Mac mini touts incredible value for a compact computer, and if you are looking to daily-drive one, it can be yours from $569 only.
