Apple's commitment to protecting user privacy is widely established not only among users but also in the industry, which sets it apart from the competition. The company plans to proceed with AI capabilities on iOS 18 with an on-device approach to ensure further privacy and security. According to an interesting find, the newly launched M4 iPad Pro has a privacy upgrade feature that no one knows about yet.

Apple's M4 iPad Pro offers enhanced security through its Secure Indicator Mechanism (SLM)

This feature was discovered by Guilherme Rambo, who noticed that an enhanced security mechanism is initiated when the camera and microphone are used on the iPad Pro. He mentioned how light indicators are activated with a more secure integration with the hardware instead of software alone, which could make it difficult for malware or some apps to access the phone without the users' knowledge. He stated on Mastodon:

Fun fact about the M4 iPad Pro: it’s the first device to support and use Apple’s new Secure Indicator Light (SIL) mechanism. When using the microphone or camera, the corresponding indicator dot is effectively rendered in hardware, making it a lot less likely that any malware or user space app would be able to access those sensors without the user’s knowledge.

These light security indicators were first introduced in 2020 with iOS 14. Whenever the sensors are used, orange and green dots appear to inform users that an app is using the camera or mic. Apple seems to have opted for a different approach for the M4 iPad Pro, as the privacy feature is now closely tied to the hardware. While the previous indicators were linked to software, the new security system enhances privacy to a greater extent.

Rambo stumbled upon the upgrade after finding the Secure Enclave, which was part of the M4 chip. However, the purpose of this component was ambiguous. Later, the functionality of the secure part was made clear, and that was to prevent any malicious app from gaining access to the camera or the mic.

Currently, this security measure is only limited to the M4 iPad Pro, but we expect Apple to extend it to the iPhone 16 Pro and the M4 Mac series sometime this year. However, Apple has not made any public announcement about this feature, and we wonder why. We believe the reason could be Apple's concerns regarding the privacy and security features put in place on other devices, as they still use a software-focused approach.
