The M4 iPad Pro received positive reviews from the tech community, but it still remains to be seen how the company is planning to differentiate it from the budget iPads. The iPad Air was upgraded alongside the 'Pro' model, with a new 13-inch variant making the rounds as a viable replacement. However, Apple seems to have misstated at launch that the M2 iPad Air houses a 10-core GPU.
Apple falsely advertised that the new M2 iPad Air has 10-GPU cores
The iPad Air houses the same M2 chip as last generation's iPad Pro models, sort of, as the company has downgraded the device on paper. After the pre-orders for the iPad Air went live last month, the company shared the technical specifications of the device on its official website. Back then, the specifications showed the M2 chip featuring an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. However, it has now been discovered by 9to5mac that the company has decreased the GPU cores from 10 to 9.
Apple's change in the specifications could fall under false advertising as it claimed a certain level of performance and then decreased the GPU core. We are also not familiar with why the company found it necessary to make the change. It could be possible that the yields of the M2 chip with a 10-core GPU are lower than expected.
However, some Apple regional store webpages still show the device with a 10-core GPU, and it is possible that the company will upgrade these pages as well. The Cupertino giant has been asked to comment on the scenario, but so far, there has been no response. It is quite surprising to see Apple market the device with a 10-core GPU on its online store as well as the support document while offering different specifications.
The M2 chip on the mini-LED iPad Pro came with a 10-core GPU, and this only shows that the new iPad Air is less capable than the older 'Pro' model. It was previously speculated that Apple had eliminated the performance gap with the mini-LED iPad Pro, but it seems that it found a new way to create differentiating elements.
As we have stated earlier, the reason could be Apple's yields for the M2 chip with a 10-core GPU, which led the company to ship the device with a binned version of the chip with a 9-core GPU. As for the devices the company sold prior to changing the tech specs, they also potentially house a 9-core GPU, and the latest change is only for clarification purposes.
