Instead of revamping Bixby by trying to imbue it with enhanced AI capabilities, Samsung appears to be borrowing a page out of Apple's playbook by tethering a much more capable LLM from Perplexity at the backend of its bespoke voice assistant. And now, you can see real-time snapshots of this complex interplay, courtesy of @GalaxyTechie.
Samsung's Bixby offloads complex queries onto an LLM from Perplexity or DeepSeek
We explained recently how Samsung intends to power its bespoke voice assistant Bixby with an LLM from Perplexity AI, akin to what Apple intends to do with its Siri by leveraging Google's bespoke 1.2-trillion-parameter AI model.
We have also explained that, should this tie-up materialize, you would be able to perform a variety of AI-based actions using the "Hey Plex" voice command. Moreover, while this functionality is likely to be available on all Android phones, there are a number of hints that suggest that Samsung is further optimizing the feature for its own Galaxy devices.
Now, Galaxy Techie has performed a OneUI 8.5 deep-dive, capturing snapshots of how Bixby's integration with Perplexity and DeepSeek plays out in real-time.
Up until recently, Samsung's Bixby could handle basic phone control commands with finesse but would invariably stumble when called upon to answer complex questions.
With Bixby Live, Samsung has equipped its bespoke voice assistant with eight agents: general agent, tour guide, interview, positive support, storyteller, listening ear, English-speaking, and dress matching.
Additional capabilities include:
- You can now generate AI-based podcasts, images, videos, and documents, with support available for analyzing multiple images and documents simultaneously.
- Get in-depth answers to complex queries.
- Can analyze live notifications as they appear in the status bar and on the lock screen.
- Additional functionalities include deep thinking, intelligent execution, AI generation, document mind mapping, AI music playback, and English speaking practice, among others.
