Huawei is working on a new smartphone launch, and according to the detailed specifications shared by a tipster, it will be powered by a new chipset, dubbed the Kirin ‘K9.’ Whether or not it is a rebranded version of the Kirin 9000S, we discuss further in our findings, so read on.

‘K9’ could just be a shorter name for the Kirin 9000S, but tipster does not mention it

On Weibo, the official name of Huawei’s smartphone was not mentioned by Digital Chat Station, but Huawei Central was ahead of the curve and stated that the rumored specifications belong to the unreleased Nova 12 Ultra. Alongside the curved OLED panel and the ceramic glass, the Nova 12 Ultra also sports an impressive camera configuration. Also, just like Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite, Huawei will incorporate its two-way satellite communication in the Nova 12 Ultra too, but it appears that the feature will be limited to China.

Now that the specifications are out of the way, let us focus on the Kirin ‘K9,’ which may be a new SoC being tested by Huawei. The model name could just be short for Kirin 9000S, but the Digital Chat Station could have gone ahead and written that too, but he did not. It is possible that the K9 is another version of the Kirin 9000S, but the manufacturing process of the SoC was not stated either.

For those that do not know, both Huawei and SMIC silently announced a 5nm chipset, suggesting that they have found a way to mass produce wafers on advanced lithography without the assistance of U.S. firms and those barred by trade sanctions. Currently, there is no word if the Kirin ‘K9’ will utilize this 5nm process or stick with the same 7nm used to fabricate the Kirin 9000S.

However, if it is a 5nm SoC, then it could end up powering the P70’s innards next year, though it is strange that a ‘cutting-edge’ silicon would be featured in a relatively unknown smartphone model than Huawei’s premium series. Then again, it is entirely possible that the Kirin ‘K9’ is simply short for the Kirin 9000S, but we will have to wait for the official launch of the Nova 12 Ultra to find out more.
