The Elder Scrolls VI was announced back in June 2018, but we have seen nothing of the new entry in the series since. The game has been so long in development, and such a long time coming, that even Todd Howard jokingly said that he has never heard about it.
"I've never heard of it," Howard said to IGN when asked in a new interview focused on Starfield's upcoming PlayStation 5 release about the current state of the game. Earlier in the interview, Howard said to "pretend we didn't announce it. Doesn't exist," which makes it clear how Bethesda is not yet ready to speak about the next entry in the series, whose wait is probably still going to be long.
Despite Todd Howard's initial reluctance in talking about The Elder Scrolls VI, he did talk a little about the game when asked about the lessons learned with Starfield that have been carried over for the development of Bethesda's next game, lessons that will benefit the game's development significantly.
"But the one thing I'd say is really in the tech as we're going to Creation Engine 3. Again, the team has done a really incredible job at not just pushing what it is, but how it's integrated into our development cycle. So, you don't feel that what we're doing on a day-to-day basis, like when the game goes down. So, we're in a fortunate position where the builds of the game are really consistently working every day. Well, not every day, but we've had more days than we've ever had where the build is good, there's new stuff in it, and we can play it," Howard said.
"And when you're making those kinds of technical changes as we talked about, often you're pulling the rug out from under the team who's making content. [You don't want] to be like, ‘Okay, that doesn't work for this period of time, you're going to have to wait until we get that working again.’ And we've done a really good job of managing that on this game. And with Starfield, we struggled there for a number of years in terms of when we went through the engine change," Bethesda's executive producer concluded, highlighting an important point that is likely to place The Elder Scrolls VI's launch content in a better position than Starfield's with the repeated points of interest that got old very quickly.
Regardless of how development is proceeding, The Elder Scrolls VI will have significant challenges when it launches. With Skyrim being such a massively popular game, the studio is in a "no-win" situation, according to former Bethesda Lead Artist Nate Purkeypile.
