iPhone Sales In China Took A Double-Digit Beating Year-Over-Year, But On The Flip Side, Overall Shipments Have Increased

iPhone sales in China have declined drastically

Apple recorded a revenue of $119.6 billion in its Q1 2024 earnings call, beating the previous amount that it held a year ago. The new figures were uplifted by strong iPhone sales, whose $69.7 billion revenue exceeded the $65.78 billion in Q1 2023, but diving deeper, China, which is regarded as a key market for Apple, is witnessing a massive sales slump. There are various factors that led to this decline, but the company CEO, Tim Cook, believes that the iPhone is not losing popularity.

Apple CEO Tim Cook argues that the dollar is very strong compared to the Chinese Yuan, hinting that the iPhone is not losing steam

The latest data states that year-over-year, iPhone sales in China declined 13 percent, with revenue in the region accumulating $20.82 billion. This means that a single country alone generates 29.8 percent of Apple’s iPhone revenue, signifying that the market holds tremendous importance for the trillion-dollar company. CEO Tim Cook has commented on the recent numbers and believes that it has more to do with the iPhone being stronger than the Chinese Yuan rather than the iPhone losing its momentum in China.

“If you look at the 13 and then you do a double click to look at Mainland China and look at constant currency, the dollar is very strong versus the RMB. And so that -13 goes to a mid-single digit number. And so that’s how we did on the phone last quarter. The good news is that we’re four out of the top six top-selling smartphones in urban China.”

There might be some weight to Cook’s claims because even with Huawei re-entering its home turf with the Mate 60 series and shipping an estimated 30 million units so far, three iPhone models occupied the top 5 best-selling spots in China for October 2023, with the iPhone 15 Pro Max being the most popular. The Mate 60 Pro held the number two position, highlighting that while Huawei is mounting a comeback, it has a mountain to climb before it, and Apple can have an ‘apples to apples’ comparison.

Still, despite maintaining popularity, Apple was forced to introduce a rare discount in China, where even the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s price was slashed, indicating that there is some trouble in this market. One analyst has predicted that Apple will face numerous challenges heading into the year, with iPhone shipments predicted to drop by 15 percent, as the iPhone 16 will lack compelling features. However, February has just started, and the overall statistics can drastically change at the end of 2024, so we will revisit Apple’s performance and see if there was any improvement in China.
