The market hasn’t responded well to smartphones bearing the slimmer form factor, so it’s unsurprising that the iPhone Air failed to garner a positive response in major markets. However, Apple isn’t giving up on this form factor because the company is preparing the iPhone Air 2 for a spring launch next year. With this release, the Cupertino firm is expected to introduce two upgrades that weren’t present in the predecessor.

One of the upgrades arriving to the iPhone Air 2 is an ultrawide-angle lens, which is similar to the base iPhone 18

Apple has been previously reported to be testing a dual-rear-camera configuration on the iPhone Air 2 with a high resolution to address the single shooter limitations of the iPhone Air. The addition of a second physical sensor can open up a world of possibilities for photography and videography, with Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman stating that Apple also aims to improve battery life on the iPhone Air 2.

Unfortunately, improving the device’s endurance won’t happen by transitioning to a silicon-carbon battery, but the traditional ways of using the incredibly powerful and efficient A20 Pro, which is also said to be found in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. We also believe that the iPhone Air 2 will be treated to Apple’s C2 5G modem, just like the rest of the lineup, further contributing to that battery life.

It appears that the California-based giant’s efforts on improving iOS 27 arrived just in time because it’s also the software optimizations that’ll go a long way in ensuring that supported iPhones will last a considerably longer period. Also, given that Apple is working with incredibly limited space, which is made even more so thanks to the thin form factor, the company has previously been reported to use a customized version of Face ID.

This module is reportedly slimmer to accommodate a second rear camera. If Apple can properly address the two major complaints about slim flagships with the iPhone Air 2, this category could once again gain the momentum it needs. A number of Chinese competitors have abandoned development on their sleek handsets because there were too many compromises to begin with, but Apple will have another crack at this segment.

Assuming the iPhone Air 2 fails to generate a positive response, we won’t be surprised to see the company return to its older ‘Plus’ models in the future.
