Apple Plans To Transform Its iPhone 18 Pro Lineup From A Daily Driving Necessity To Life-Saving Devices Without Limits – Here’s How

Apple plans to transform its iPhone 18 Pro lineup into life-saving devices

As advanced as smartphones are, we doubt that companies have even scratched the surface of their capabilities. With sufficient firepower to rival desktop computers, it’s almost as if the hardware continues to evolve, but there are negligible use cases to take advantage of the internals. Fortunately, Apple may have found a way to transform its upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max into literal life savers, and that too, without placing individuals in awkward and limiting situations. Here’s how the company can accomplish this.

Apple’s Emergency SOS via satellite feature is severely underrated, but it’s also limiting - Here’s how the iPhone 18 Pro can break that ceiling

The new and highly improved C2 5G modem is said to debut with the entire iPhone 18 lineup, including the iPhone Fold, but what could be so special about the C1’s successor? Is it the fact that it could be Apple’s first baseband chip to support mmWave networks? No, but that’s still a helpful addition. The C2 is expected to offer a seamless connection to satellites. Back in 2022, when Apple introduced Emergency SOS via satellite for the iPhone 14, the feature required an open sky, and even then, you still needed luck for messages to be sent to and from devices in a timely fashion.

The iPhone 18 Pro’s C2 modem could fix this obstacle by treating satellites as distant cell phone towers, and that’s through supporting the 5G NR-NTN standard, or New Radio Non-Terrestrial Networks. By integrating satellite connectivity with 5G modems, future iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max owners won’t need to point towards an open sky to send and receive messages. Instead, when cellular reception is lost, the connection would fall back to a satellite. This functionality can be present while the iPhone is in a person’s pocket or present indoors, making it a seamless way to call for help without panicking unnecessarily.

Apple has yet to charge customers to use its Emergency SOS via satellite, but could that change with the upgraded feature?

The benevolent side of Apple that all of us appreciate is that even though its Emergency SOS via satellite was touted as a free service for the first two years for supported devices, the company has yet to charge a dime from customers, because saving lives shouldn’t have a dollar amount attached. Also, it won’t be a positive look for the company if it charges a monthly or annual amount from those who may never have to endure such dangerous circumstances

Furthermore, offering the service for free with an iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max is just another way to secure a lifelong customer. Apple might be labeled as a greedy trillion-dollar giant that charges a hefty premium for RAM and storage upgrades for Macs, but we doubt the Cupertino firm will head down this path. We also have little confidence that customers will pay any amount to use this service, so why not offer it for free, while making it back another way? Do you think the C2 will offer 5G satellite connectivity this year? Let us know in the comments?
