Apple has been rumored to be testing its iPhone 18 lineup with under-screen Face ID, with one of the company’s prototypes housing an upper-left-positioned front-facing camera. To achieve this feat, the company is expected to resort to even more advanced panel technology, and according to the latest report, that’s precisely what Apple is pursuing, in the form of LTPO+. The advanced nature of these displays means the technology giant can rely only on Korean suppliers to mass produce them, and one reason for adopting LTPO+ is that it supports Under-Display Infrared (UDIR) technology, which allows Face ID’s relevant components to be placed behind the OLED.

The complex nature of LTPO+ means that only Samsung and LG will be responsible for mass producing such technology for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max; BOE will be out of Apple’s supply chain for the upcoming flagships

An earlier report stated that Apple was exploring High Mobility Oxide display technology that would be more efficient and less expensive than LTPO, but according to ETNews, the company is instead pursuing the adoption of LTPO+, with the company only introducing two regular-shaped flagships this year, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which are slated to launch alongside the iPhone Fold. However, a display with such technological advancements means that Chinese display maker BOE will be out of Apple’s supply chain, leaving only Samsung and LG to pick up all the panel orders.

Additionally, Samsung has been reported to be the exclusive supplier of the iPhone Fold, with the company also reportedly commencing the mass production of OLED technology for the redesigned M6 MacBook Pro. By incorporating LTPO+ into the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple will be one step closer to its ‘all screen’ iPhone release, meaning this display technology can be further refined, allowing the front-facing camera to be placed underneath without compromising image quality.

We expect Apple’s LTPO+ technology to be adopted in other products, such as its higher-end MacBook Pro models, but for the time being, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are reported to be the first to ship with it.
