iPhone 17 Air battery is half the thickness of the iPhone 17 Pro’s, highlighting Apple’s extreme thinness pursuit.

Apple plans to unveil its ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air next month and according to newly surfaced information, the handset's internal battery is astonishingly thin at just 2.49mm, making it half the thickness of the battery found in the iPhone 17 Pro. The leaker has shared an image of the battery comparison, and it is possibly in line with prior leaks suggesting that the company will use a sub-3000 mAh capacity in the device.

The iPhone 17 Air’s wafer-thin battery shows Apple’s bold gamble on design, sparking concerns over all-day performance

The battery size originates from a Korean Naver blog attributed to "yeux1122," who also previously suggested that the iPhone 17 Air will come with a 2,800 mAh battery. Subsequent leaks further noted that the battery capacity will be just under 3,000 mAh. The comparison images of the batteries illustrate the dramatic disparity in thickness between the iPhone 17 Air and the iPhone 17 Pro models and the company’s pursuit of achieving extreme thinness.

While the battery size and capacity are lower, which is a serious concern for the end user, the sheer wafer-thin size shows Apple’s engineering commitment. At just 2.49mm thin, Apple appears to be pushing the boundaries of battery design, likely leveraging advancements such as silicon-anode high-density cells, which supply chain analysts previously speculated. It was also previously reported that the chassis thickness of the iPhone 17 Air will be 5.5mm, which is almost double the size of its battery. The reduction in battery size is clearly central to keeping the depth of the device at a minimum.

Even though a thinner design will provide users with novelty and more options compared to the rest of the models, there are certain drawbacks that you should be aware of. According to internal testing, only about 60 to 70 percent of users will be able to go a full day on a single charge on the iPhone 17 Air, an issue that Apple is well aware of. To tackle this, the company is planning to introduce an optional battery case accessory to offset the deficiency for users who need extended runtime. This means that the design choice is a bold gamble for Apple, as the device will not attract power users, but those who are more inclined towards the looks of the device.

Apart from the battery case, the iPhone 17 Air will also rely on the efficiency of the A19 chip and the custom modem, which has proved to be a game-changer for the iPhone 16e's battery life. We will be keeping a close eye on the battery details, so do stick around for further clarification. Do you think the iPhone 17 Air will last you an entire day? Let us know in the comments.
