Apple is working on a boatload of changes for the iPhone 16 models, ranging from camera improvements to the design. While the handsets are scheduled to launch later this year, we are hearing that the iPhone 16 will add a new capacitive button with dedicated features oriented toward the camera hardware. However, little to no details have been available previously that shared the kind of features we should be looking forward to. According to a Weibo leaker, the Capture Button on the iPhone 16 could be offered as a two-step shutter button, similar to digital cameras.
The Capture Button on iPhone 16 could be used for adjusting focus and as a shutter button
It was initially reported that Apple has plans to launch the iPhone 16 models with a new capacitive button below the Power or Side Button. However, the functionality of the button was unknown. The company recently launched the iPhone 15 Pro models with an Action Button, which is essentially a shortcut button. Since the Action Button can perform generalized actions, the new Capture Button would solely respond to camera functionality on the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models.
In previous reports, we have covered that the Capture Button could feature the ability to zoom in and out through the touch and slide mechanism. Since it is rumored to be a capacitive button, it will have the ability to differentiate between a tap and a slide. Additionally, the pressure-sensitive nature of the button could also make room for multiple input commands. According to "Instant Digital" on Weibo, the Capture Button would be used as a shutter button, and pressing the button halfway will adjust the focus.
If you are unfamiliar, this is the same technology that most DSLR and mirrorless cameras use. If you press the shutter button halfway, it will adjust the focus of the image or video, and a harder or full press will capture the results. Apple appears to be working on a similar button for the iPhone, which could be called the "Capture Button".
Apple appears to be gearing the iPhone to become a full-fledged camera system that can be used by professionals. However, it remains to be seen the type of upgrades the company is bringing to the Camera app which could utilize the Capture Button more effectively on the iPhone. As mentioned, the Capture Button will be situated below the Power button on the iPhone, which is the ideal spot for a dedicated camera button in landscape mode.
Note that the iPhone 16 launch is months away, and the devices are yet to enter the mass production stage. Henceforth, take the news with a grain of salt, as the company's plans could also switch. Apple could also have additional features planned for the Capture Button, which we are unfamiliar with at his stage.
