Fresh Report From Supply Chain Corroborates Claims Of Apple Going Partially Notch-free With The iPhone Lineup Next Year
The last true innovation on the iPhone came with the iPhone X. Apple became the first smartphone manufacturer to introduce 3D facial recognition on a smartphone. Face ID became the gold standard in facial biometrics, as Apple had to ensure that the tech was secure enough to be used with the company's mobile payment service Apple Pay.
However, the need to squeeze a multitude of sensors while keeping up with the smartphone world's bezel-free trend required Apple to make a compromise. This resulted in a notch making it on the iPhone's front - a feature that drew ire from developers and users alike. Now, following Kuo's report, we've got another one that sheds light on Apple future iPhone plans. If you hate the notch on the iPhone, this report is bound to make you happy.
Today's details are from Apple's supply chain, and they show how the iPhone will change in the future. The information presented to us claims that next year we'll get an iPhone without a True Depth Camera setup This device will also feature on-screen fingerprint recognition. However, we'll still have to reserve our judgment on Credit Suisse's claim of an 'all-screen' virtual fingerprint recognition making it on the iPhone next year. Deciding to remove Face ID from the smartphone lineup will present Apple with several challenges, one of which will be to find an equally secure alternative for Apple Pay.
We're also presented with details for the iPhone's display changes. This year's smartphones from Apple will utilize Chip-on-Glass and Chip-on-Flex display panels. A COG display significantly reduces panel thickness as the LCD driver is soldered directly on the display's glass plate. Apple will migrate from COG displays to Chip-on-Flex and Chip-on-Plastic panels for the 2020 iPhone lineup, as the company phases out LCD from its smartphones. COF will then be completely replaced by Chip-on-Plastic in 2021 when the iPhone will fully shift to virtual fingerprint recognition.
