iOS 18 to bring upgrades to Apple Music and a Passthrough feature

With the WWDC being a couple of weeks away, Apple is preparing to announce the upcoming updates for its entire product line. The focus of the conference will mainly be the company's upcoming software releases as we expect Apple to catch up on the AI frenzy and share its AI-on-device integration initiatives. However, recent reports suggest Apple is currently internally testing some of the upgraded features it is bringing with the iOS 18, including the Apple Music app.

The Smart Song Transition would work better than the crossfade option and give smoother transitions with iOS 18 in Apple Music

Apple is trying to revamp the experience of Apple Music by bringing significant updates to help deliver smoother transitions. According to a report by AppleInsider, Apple is set on bringing an upgraded feature to the Music app called the 'Smart Song Transition.' This would be, in terms of efficiency, better than crossfade, which is an existing feature in Apple Music. It would be built on the crossfade feature and would not be a separate option.

With the existing feature, you can adjust the time of the crossfade by simply going to the Settings app > Choosing Music > Tapping on the Crossfade option. A slider will then allow you to adjust the duration of the crossfade. Apparently, Apple Music users would be given the option of smart song transitions to adjust the time between songs from one to twelve seconds. At the time of writing, not much information is provided about how smart transition would work better than the feature we currently use.

A similar option is available on Spotify as well. It is said to be a complete crossfading solution with the Automix option and the crossfade transition duration being the same as Apple's new smart song transition feature.

The other feature that has been kept under the hood and has everyone curious is the 'Passthrough' feature. This feature is only said to be offered for supported hardware, but its details are left in the air. What we can deduce from the report is that the feature will be somehow linked to Spatial Audio.

Passthrough could be a new name for Spatial Audio, but we cannot be certain since nothing has been confirmed yet. While numerous sources have also speculated that it will be like Gapless Playback by Spotify, it is still based on initial reports and we will wait for the official confirmation before drawing conclusions. We expect the new AI features in iOS 18 to be announced at WWDC on June 10th. We are also looking forward to the in-app upgrades and hope the Apple Music experience will be comparable to Spotify's.
