Intel Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs are rumored to have been canceled but the devs are still adding support for the chips within Linux.
Intel Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPU Launch Still Clouded In Mystery As New Linux Patches Show Up
The latest support patches for Intel's Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs have been discovered by Phoronix who made the inference through a pin control change in the next version of the Linux Kernel.
Support for Meteor Lake-S is included in Intel's Pinctrl driver. The changes were made just hours ago and will be visible once the new version (Linus 6.5) is released. It is reported that the new driver already supported other MTL models, and the addition of Lake-S demonstrates that the developers are working to support the new chips.
The news for Intel Meteor Lake-S cancellation surfaced when Intel's Client CPUs roadmap showed no signs of MTL-S. However, the changes made by Intel's developers now show that Lake-S may still be in development in some capacity. One possibility could be that Meteor Lake-S will exist side-by-side with the recently revealed Raptor Lake refresh.
Diving into the details for the MTL-S lineup, it was we previously revealed that Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPUs would feature up to Core i5 SKUs & TDPs of 35-65W. The lineup would have been compatible with Intel's new 800-series chipset platform featuring the LGA 1851 socket. - MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 125W TDP
- MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 65W TDP
- MTL-S 22 (6P + 16E) / 4 Xe Cores / 35W TDP
- MTL-S 14 (6P + 8E) / 4 Xe Cores / 65WTDP
- MTL-S 14 (6P + 8E) / 4 Xe Cores / 35WTDP
From what we have managed to gather, the existing Meteor Lake-S dies are being used by Intel and its partners to validate the Arrow Lake-S CPUs. It is possible that a few Meteor Lake-S chips can be disguised under upcoming mainstream and budget SKUs and offered to consumers but nothing can be confirmed so far. What is known is that the MTL-P is headed to laptops later this fall.
The release date for Meteor Lake-S is not specific; however, according to Intel's leaked roadmap, we could expect it somewhere in 2024 since Arrow Lake-S Desktop CPUs are expected to launch either by the end of 2024 or early 2025.
