Intel's Core Ultra 7 270K CPU reaches another fantastic value proposition, hitting $259 at Microcenter, but a delidded version costs twice as much.
Intel's Core Ultra 7 270K Plus is an Uber CPU Value for just $259 at Microcenter
The Core Ultra 7 270K Plus is currently the best value option in the Intel CPU family. It offers 24 cores, and its performance more or less matches the 285K with technologies such as BOT (Binary Optimization Tool), offering a nice boost in games.
At launch, the CPU was priced at $299, and while it did see an initial price hike due to global supply chain constraints, it has since fallen below its MSRP. The CPU was recently being offered at just $279.99, $20 US lower than its MSRP, at Amazon. And now, Microcenter has started offering the chip at $259.99, a $40 US lower price than MSRP. That's quite the deal, as the price puts it just $60 US above the 250K Plus, and the 270K Plus has more of everything.
Buying A Delidded Version Costs Twice As Much Tho...
At the same time, Thermal Grizzly announced that it is offering a delidded version of the Intel Core Ultra 7 270K Plus, which it claims can offer temperature reductions by up to 22 °C. Delidded CPUs are to be used with a direct-die waterblock and a high-end liquid-cooling setup, enabling lower temperatures that offer more headroom for overclocking.
Though delidding can be done with a kit, the process isn't simple. As such, Thermal Grizzly offers its very own expertise by not only delidding the chip but also verifying that each chip works properly through a rigorous series of tests. The company also offers its own warranty and statutory guarantee coverage. Each chip is shipped with a Test protocol card that lists the evaluated temperatures on Cinebench R23 and a USB flash drive that includes the pictures of the delidded chip.
The company does include the IHS (Heat Spreader) in the kit, but doesn't recommend using it due to differences in the height of the die and the heatspreader. But the main concern should be the pricing. Thermal Grizzly is asking $525.33 US for the Delidded 270K Plus, almost double its MSRP, but the price might make sense since this is a niche enthusiast-focused product. But for regular users, the $259.99 US price is hard to ignore.
