An impressive Unreal Engine 5 tech demo was showcased today in a new video, providing a new look at what will be possible to do with the latest version of the engine by Epic Games.

The Secluded Orchid tech demo was created by FYQD-Studio, the developer behind Bright Memory Infinite. Developed in roughly two hours, 5,000 8K resolution photos were used to create high-quality 3D models that were then ported into Unreal Engine 5. While the demo may look rough at times, especially the movement system, which was implemented from motion capture in only 20 minutes, the tech demo looks incredibly detailed and realistic, showing what developers can achieve even with limited development time.

Since its release, Unreal Engine 5 has been updated multiple times with new improvements and features. The engine's latest version, version 5.3, left preview access earlier this month, bringing enhancements to core rendering, developer iteration, and virtual production toolsets, experimental new rendering, animation, and simulation features, such as cinematic-quality volumetric rendering, orthographic rendering, a Skeletal Editor, panel-based Chaos Cloth, and support for SMPTE ST 2110.

Big AAA games taking full advantage of Unreal Engine 5 have yet to be released, but titles like Layers of Fear, Remnant II, and Immortals of Aveum provided a very good look at what can be created using the engine's features, although current gaming hardware may not yet be ready for it, as seen in the game developed by Ascendant Studios, which today received support for AMD FSR 3 to smooth out performance on every GPU.
