Huawei HiSilicon shipped 8 million smartphone chipsets in Q1 2024

The Kirin 9000S launch last year, followed by the Kirin 9010 that powers Huawei’s newest Pura 70 series, has helped the company reach a new high as far as smartphone chipset shipments and revenue go. The latest data reveals that the former Chinese giant’s HiSilicon division, which is responsible for mass producing Kirin SoCs, shipped 8 million units in the first quarter of 2024 and generated $6 billion in revenue. However, compared to the competition, Huawei has a long road ahead of it as it slowly takes back its lost market share.

MediaTek holds first place for the highest smartphone chipset shipments, but Apple made the most revenue in Q1 2024

With the $6 billion in revenue generated in Q1 2024, Canalys estimates that Huawei surpassed Google, with the advertising giant reportedly racking up just two million in smartphone chipset shipments that brought in two billion in revenue. The latest insight also states that Huawei is gunning for Samsung’s place, which shipped 18 million chipsets during the same period and made $9 billion in revenue. However, the Korean giant’s overall shipments were 18 percent lower compared to the Q1 2023 period.

Apple also suffered a chipset shipment decline, with its A-series accumulating 49 million units, making it 16 percent lower compared to the same quarter a year ago. However, the Cupertino firm towers over its competition in the revenue segment, where it generated a whopping $56 billion. MediaTek might have garnered the highest smartphone chipset shipments for Q1 2024 at 114 million units, but the Taiwanese fabless semiconductor manufacturer made just $23 billion for its efforts.

What is surprising is that MediaTek’s competitor Qualcomm sold 75 million smartphone SoCs but managed to generate $37 billion this quarter. Overall, Canalys reports that worldwide smartphone chipsets witnessed a total of 292.1 million shipments in Q1 2024, with Huawei’s HiSilicon arm making up just 2.7 percent of that figure. However, the chart reveals that the Chinese company’s resurgence is putting pressure on Apple’s total chipset revenue and shipment momentum, as on both occasions, the technology behemoth suffered losses this quarter.

We do not expect the following quarters to be easy for Apple, as Huawei intends to unveil the Mate 70 family in October this year. However, before that, we should see HarmonyOS Next getting announced in September, which is Huawei’s in-house operating system that is reportedly being developed from scratch and should help the company rid itself of Google and its Android platform.
