Resident Evil 4 Separate Ways

Resident Evil 4 “Separate Ways” DLC has arrived, letting players see what Ada Wong was busying herself with during the game’s main story (you can check out Wccftech’s impressions of the expansion here). Of course, as always with Resident Evil, Separate Ways contains its fair share of puzzles, secrets, and unique mechanics to unravel.

RE4 Separate Ways Chapter 4 slows things down a bit and presents the player with more puzzles, as you’re tasked with finding specific ingredients in order to make a suppressant for the Plagas infection. The first of these ingredients is Red Ink, which requires you solve a pair of puzzles. You won’t be able to progress through the DLC until you solve this puzzle, but thankfully, we have the solution for you. Scroll on down for the answer…

Step 1 – Opening the Stone Tablet Door Lock

Shortly into Chapter 4, after saving Luis from a fire, you’ll be set loose in the castle to collect items for the suppressor, including the red ink. At the first junction you come to, head right. You’ll come to a locked door with a pair of “lithographic stones” in it. You have to place the right stones in the slots, but you only have two of them at the moment! You need two more.

The first is right behind you on a bench.

For the second, head back to the branching path and head straight past the tipped bookcase. At the end of this hall, you’ll find the Merchant and another stone. Head back to the door.

The idea here is to match the stones to the markings on the door. Some of these are obvious, but others are partly worn off, only showing a vague shape or color, but it’s still enough to suss out what goes where. Also, be aware that your can flip the stones over, as each one has different images on the front and back. The image above shows how to arrange the tiles. Starting at the top and going clockwise – red fan square, black umbrella square, black dress hexagon, and red bonnet hexagon.

Step 2 – Shooting the Shields

Despite opening the door, you still don’t have the red ink just yet. On a table in the next room, you’ll find a clue indicating you should shoot a collection of shields in a specific order. Problem is – this room is full of shields. Which is the right ones?

The answer, is the collection of shields to the left of the fireplace. Shoot the bottom-left shield first, then the top-right, then the bottom-right. If you shoot the right shield it will tilt over. Shoot all three correctly and a drawer with the ink in it will open up.

Now those were some good old classic RE puzzles right there – and now the Red Ink is yours!
