In Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, your character level is only half the battle. To truly unlock the potential of your party, you need to master Vocations. While the game streamlines many aspects of the classic experience, it still doesn't explicitly list the precise Proficiency Points required to reach the next rank, leaving players to guess based on the progress bars in the menu.
If you’re looking to master any Vocation as quickly as possible without turning the game into a tedious grind, I’ve conducted extensive testing to find the most time-efficient loops.
Here is the best way to power up your Vocations while maintaining the game's difficulty balance.
The Proficiency Points Testing
For these tests, I used a party of level 20 characters: the Hero (Sailor), Maribel (Dancer), and Ruff (Warrior). I tested three different loops to see which yielded the fastest results to level up the three Vocations from Rank 1 to Rank 2 using the Ultra Fast combat speed and Auto-Battle options.
| Method | Region | Proficiency Settings | Average Time |
| Land Loop 1 (Overworld combat, 1 Proficiency Point per victory) | Frobisher | Any - they don't change the Proficiency Points you gain in overworld combat | 2m 05s |
| Land Loop 2 (Current level enemies, regular battles) | Al-Balad | More (+7 Pts) | 1m 51s (Maribel) / 2m 30s (Others) |
| The Sea Loop (Weak Enemies, regular battles) | Estard Seas | More (+7 Pts) | 1m 20s (Maribel) / 1m 50s (Others) |
The Winner: The Estard Sea Loop
The test results are clear. While I did not need to voyage into the sea to engage weak enemies in regular battles, as this can be done by simply not attacking weak enemy symbols on the field, it proved to be the fastest way to farm Vocation Proficiency against weak enemies in rapid succession to receive the full +7 Proficiency Point reward (when the Proficiency Earned slider is set to More). As long as these enemies are consistently weaker than your party, the battle can end in seconds.
Tips for Efficiency
To grind Vocation Proficiency efficiently, ensure your settings are tuned for speed. Navigate to the options menu and set:
- Combat Speed: Ultra Fast
- Experience Earned: Less (to avoid overleveling)
- Damage Dealt: More (to ensure the fastest battle completion)
- Proficiency Earned: More (increases the base from 5 to 7 points)
- Monster Strength: Any (they will go down before they can even act)
Remember to stick to weak enemies only for maximum speed. While fighting stronger enemies provides more EXP, not only does it risk overleveling your characters (especially if you fight against Metal Slimes that can easily be defeated with a certain trick), but you will also require more time to win battles.
Once you have found a suitable location where weak enemies spawn, don't wait for the enemy symbols to reappear: use Ruff's Whistle ability to enter battle after battle quickly, and speed up your Vocations mastery process.
The Moonlighting Bonus
Later in the journey, once Aishe joins the party, you can further optimize this process by speaking with the High Priestess at Alltrades Abbey. This unlocks the Moonlighting system.
Moonlighting allows a character to equip a second Vocation. If any of the two equipped Vocations have been mastered, you will receive:
- +3 Bonus Points for the unmastered Vocation.
- +1 Bonus Point for overworld combat.
By stacking these bonuses with the optimized grinding loop, you can master even the most demanding Vocations in a fraction of the usual time.
