Here's how to get the Genji gear set in Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles with as little trouble as possible

Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles includes a good number of rare items, but none is as rare as the Genji gear set. Carried in battle by a specific late-game enemy, the only way to get these unique items is by stealing them in battle. Here's how to do so almost effortlessly.

NOTE: The strategy was refined and tested in Enhanced Mode's Tactician difficulty before successfully testing it in Knight and Squire difficulties. Screenshots captured from the 1.0 Steam release.

Where to Find the Genji Gear Set

The Genji gear set is equipped by Elmdore in the Limberry Castle Keep battle in Chapter 4. He does not carry the gear during the Riovanes Castle Roof battle in Chapter 3, so this battle is your only chance to steal it from him.

Party and Build Recommendations

Bringing the right party with the right build is crucial to steal the Genji equipment set and the Masamune sword without heavily relying on chance and RNG luck. The recommended party is:

  • Ramza
  • Generic unit with Ninja main Job, Thief, and Monk secondary Jobs
  • Orlandeau
  • Mustadio
  • Beowulf

Ramza

  • Job: Gallant Knight
  • Command: Mettle
  • Secondary Command: Iaido
  • Reaction Ability: Auto-Potion (Required: Discard all Potions except X-Potions)
  • Support Skill: Doublehand (or Dual Wield)
  • Movement Ability: Movement +1 (Movement +2 preferred, Movement +3 ideal)

Ramza is the mandatory character in every story battle in Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles, so his build has to be tweaked for maximum efficacy to help steal the Genji gear set. For this battle, use the Gallant Knight Job to access Mettle for the Tailwind ability, which increases the speed of any unit, and equip the best possible gear. Equip the Auto-Potion Support Ability and a Movement Ability like Movement +2 or Movement +3.

The Iaido Samurai Job Command is a solid choice to access AOE healing with the Muramasa katana with no charge time, as you will often need to heal multiple units quickly due to Elmdor's Sword Spirit abilities. Equipping the Nu Khai Armband to prevent Confusion is good, but not mandatory, as prioritizing speed increases is just as important as preventing this status ailment, especially at the start of the battle.

Ninja with Thief and Monk Skills

  • Job: Ninja
  • Command: Throw
  • Secondary Command: Steal (Required: Steal Weapon, Steal Shield, Steal Helmet, Steal Armor, Steal Accessory)
  • Reaction Ability: Auto-Potion (Required: Discard all Potions except X-Potions)
  • Support Skill: Brawler
  • Movement Ability: Movement +1 (Movement +2 preferred, Movement +3 ideal)

The generic Ninja unit and its build will be the core of your strategy for stealing the Genji gear set. In this case, the build is very specific, meant to provide maximum speed, mobility, survivability, and highest steal chance. If you have recruited Cloud already, take his Thief's Cap and equip it to your Ninja, alongside the Germinas Boots for a nice speed boost. The Spellbinder swords are not mandatory, but highly recommended. They can inflict Disable, making them perfect for a battle where you want some of your enemies not to act during their turns.

The Auto-Potion Reaction Ability and the Brawler Reaction Ability are required to heal automatically if Elmdore targets the unit and enhance the Thief's Steal secondary Job Command, which is needed to access the Steal Weapon, Steal Shield, Steal Helmet, Steal Armor, and Steal Accessory abilities.

Orlandeau

  • Job: Sword Saint
  • Command: Swordplay
  • Secondary Command: Items
  • Reaction Ability: Auto-Potion (Required: Discard all Potions except X-Potions)
  • Support Skill: Throw Item
  • Movement Ability: Movement +1 (Movement +2 preferred, Movement +3 ideal)

With the Excalibur Knight Sword granting permanent Haste, the Shadowfall Swordplay skill that damage an enemy and recover the user's HP at the same time, Orlandeau will be the core of both your offensive and support strategy in the Limberry Castle Keep battle. To prevent the Assassins Celia and Lede from taking him down in a single hit, stop or charm him, equip the Barrette helmet.

For abilities, equip the Items Job Command, the Auto-Potion Reaction Ability, and the Throw Items Support Ability from the Chemist. With his innate high HP, permanent Haste, and the ability to deal and recover damage at the same time, Orlandeau will ensure characters can stay alive as others debuff Elmdore and the Ninja steals his gear.

Mustadio

  • Job: Machinist
  • Command: Aimed Shot
  • Secondary Command: Arts of War
  • Reaction Ability: Auto-Potion (Required: Discard all Potions except X-Potions)
  • Support Skill: Brawler
  • Movement Ability: Movement +1 (Movement +2 preferred, Movement +3 ideal)

In the Limberry Castle Keep battle, Elmdore is accompanied by the aforementioned Assassins Celia and Lede, who can kill any unit in a single hit and deal AOE damage via the Ultima spell. To defeat both Assassins quickly and prevent them from wreaking havoc among your party, you must disable one of them first so that you can focus your damage on the others. For this reason, there's no better character to bring to this battle than Mustadio with his Aimed Shot skills.

In addition, Elmdor also has a very high speed that you must lower using the Knight's Arts of War Rend Speed skill to make him act less often and give your Ninja more opportunities to steal his gear. To improve the hit chance of both Aimed Shot and Arts of War abilities, equip the Monk's Brawler Support Skill, and the Auto-Potion Reaction Ability to survive Elmdore's Sword Spirit attacks. Equip either the Nu Khai Armband for protection against Confusion or the Germinas/Hermes Boots for a Movement or Speed boost.

Beowulf

  • Job: Templar
  • Command: Spellblade
  • Secondary Command: Items
  • Reaction Ability: Auto-Potion (Required: Discard all Potions except X-Potions)
  • Support Skill: Throw Items
  • Movement Ability: Movement +1 (Movement +2 preferred, Movement +3 ideal)

Beowulf's Chicken is the single most crucial ability in Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles to use against Elmdore to stop him from using the Shirahadori Reaction Ability, which turns his Bravery stat into his evasion chance. Using Chicken twice on him reduces his Bravery to 1, disabling the Reaction Ability and increasing your Ninja Thief's steal chance considerably. Once Elmdore's Bravery has been lowered to 1, Beowulf can either use Disable on the Assassins if they haven't been defeated yet, or act as your primary healer, so equip the Items Job Command, the Throw Item Support Ability, and the Auto-Potion Reactive Ability to turn him into a resilient Chemist.

Turn-by-turn Strategy

Phase 1: Initial Setup and Disabling Threats

For the first few turns of the battle, you will need to defeat the Assassins Celia and Lettie.

  • Have Orlandeau and your Ninja focus all their attacks on one of the Assassins while Mustadio or Beowulf disables the other, or both. Once their HP is completely depleted, the Assassins will turn into the equally deadly Ultima Demons. Take advantage of the time they will need to act again to defeat them quickly.
  • As your heaviest attackers are dealing with the Assassins, use Ramza to heal damage when required, and use Tailwind to boost the speed of Orlandeau. This allows the Sword Saint to heal any character quickly if the need arises, or deal damage faster to the two Assassins / Ultima Demons.
  • If you do not need to disable the Assassins, have Beowulf use Chicken on Elmdor twice to lower his Bravery stat to 1. Afterwards, make him focus exclusively on healing or reviving downed units if there's no need to use Disable. After Elmdore's Bravery has slightly recovered after a few turns, use Chicken again to bring it back down to 1.

Phase 2: Full Debuff and Steal Preparation

After both Assassins have been defeated, or if you can continuously inflict them the Disable status, turn your focus to Elmdore.

  • Orlandeau and Beowulf most focus on healing damage and status ailments with items. As Elmdore can also cause the Vampire status effect which prevents you from controlling characters, you will also need to heal Elmdore or disable the Vampire-afflicted character as needed. With the Barrette, Orlandeau will be unaffected.
  • Ramza can now use Tailwind to increase the speed of the Ninja.
  • Mustadio can now use Rend Speed to lower Elmdore's speed. With Brawler and Elmdore's Bravery lowered to 1, the success rate will be around 38%.
  • The Ninja has to steal the Genji Shield first. Successfully stealing this item is critical, as it lowers his total evasion chance, making the remaining steals more likely to be successful. Without the Genji Shield and with a Bravery stat as low as 3, Mustadio's Rend Speed success rate can rise to 69% with Brawler while attacking from behind.

Phase 3: Stealing the Genji Gear

After the Genji Shield has been successful stolen, stealing the rest of the Genji gear set becomes much easier.

  • Orlandeau and Beowulf must continue to focus on healing and support, dealing with Vampire-afflicted characters as required.
  • Ramza has to continue increasing the Ninja speed.
  • Mustadio can be put safely on standby, or can use the Rend Magic skill if learned to reduce Elmdore Sword Spirit damage, in case he manages to get a turn in before you have stolen all of the Genji gear.
  • The Ninja can now steal the rest of the Genji gear set. Go for the Genji Gloves first to further reduce Elmdore Sword Spirit damage.

Phase 4: Concluding the Battle

After you have successfully stolen the whole Genji gear set and the Masamune katana, attack Elmdore with all your characters. Once his HP is depleted, the battle will end.
