Final Fantasy XVI The Rising Tide

Final Fantasy XVI: The Rising Tide story expansion is out now, and as you’d expect, it includes some new gear, including the best weapons in the game thus far. One of these is the Tonberry Knife, which isn’t the most powerful in the game in terms of raw damage, but is the most best in terms of inflicting “Will” or stagger damage. For those familiar with FF16’s combat system, staggering enemies frequently is arguably more important than just dealing raw damage, so you’re going to want to get your hands on the Tonberry Knife. Here’s how to do so…

First off, you’re going to want to re-open the blacksmith in Haven, the main town in the new The Rising Tide region of Mysidia (here’s how to do that).

You’re going to need the following crafting materials to make the Tonberry Knife – 1 Notched Tang, 1 Aqueous Membrane, 3 Orichalcum, and 2 Fool’s Gold.

How to get the Notched Tang

To get this item, you’ll need to complete the “Reign of Pain” sidequest. You’ll need to have first completed the “What Ails You” and “Uninvited Guest” quests in order to access this one. Speak to Fanet in Haven to quick this quest off.

Head out the Haven south gate and fight through the Tonberry Creepers along your path. Around half-way through the southern path, you’ll come to a particularly large group of enemies near a cave. Finish them off, then head in the cave and take on the Tonberry King. He’ll drop the Notched Fang when defeated.

How to get the Aqueous Membrane

To get this item, you’ll need to complete the “Lost in the Woods” sidequest. You’ll need to have finished The Rising Tide’s main campaign to access this quest. Talk to the young boy Ayrik in Haven to get started.

Head north of Haven, to the Riversmeet Obelisk. There’s a hunter nearby you should talk to. You’ll have a miniboss fight against an Archelon at this point.

Keep heading down the path to the north, until you come to the watery Sunken Ruins area. There you’ll face Thalaos. Defeat them to get the Aqueous Membrane.

How to get Fool’s Gold

One piece is obtained by defeating boss Master Tonberry during The Rising Tide’s main campaign. The second is found in a chest in the Father’s Fell area of Mysidia. This area is fairly easy to find, just head north from Haven and then east at the first opportunity. When the path branches, take the right path. The chest is nestled in amongst the edge of the forest and slightly easy to miss, but you should be able to locate it with a bit of persistence.

All that’s left is the Orichalcum, which is a fairly common reward for high-level quests, so you will likely have enough already.

And there you go! The Tonberry Knife should now be yours! Particularly once you upgrade it, you’ll be able to shred enemies’ Will gauges with ease.

Final Fantasy XVI can be played on PS5. The Rising Tide is out now and can be purchased for $20 a la carte or as part FF16’s $25 Expansion Pass, which also includes the first update, “Echoes of the Fallen.” You can check out Wccftech's other Final Fantasy XVI guides here.
