Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, much like the original NES release features the Personality mechanics. While mastering these mechanics is not required to complete the game, learning how they work can make quite a bit of difference, especially if you're into maxing your characters potential. Here's everything you need to know about these mechanics, and the best personality for the Hero and all Vocations.
Best Personality For The Hero and All Vocations
How the Personality System Works
You will be acquainted with the Personality system right at the beginning of the adventure. A mysterious voice will ask for your real name and birth date first before submitting you to a personality quiz, which involves a few questions picked at random among 43 possible questions. Depending on how you answer, you will be brought into an imaginary scenario where you will have to make one of eight different choices, and the one you make will determine the personality of the Hero.
Given the huge number of possibilities and how the questions are picked out, you need to make certain choices if you're aiming for a certain personality for the Hero. The other characters' personalities are assigned randomly when you recruit them at Patty's Party Planning Place in the starting town of Aliahan. Although there are 45 personalities, not all are available to all characters.
- The Hero can belong to one of the 32 starting personalities.
- 13 other personalities are reserved for the companions.
- 28 of the 45 personalities can be assigned to any character using special items to give players more control over this unique gameplay system.
Best Overall Personality
The best personality in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is, without a doubt, the Vamp personality, formerly known as Sexy. This personality provides balanced growth for all stats with minimal penalties, which is invaluable for the Hero who cannot change Vocation like every other character. If you're planning of making multi-Vocation characters, the Vamp personality is also a great choice, although more specialized personalities can be more effective if you are not going to change Vocations.
- The Vamp personality is only available for Appearance B Heroes. To get it, you must answer Yes to all the questions at the beginning of the game, answer No to the "Is it unforgivable to break a promise no matter what?" question and the three following questions, and then Yes to every other question. Once inside the castle, in the final test of character, locate the chancellor in the throne room, and reply Yes twice to his questions.
- For regular female characters, you will need to use the Guns'n'Buns book or equip the Garter, obtained by collecting a certain number of Mini Medals, to change their current personality to Vamp.
Best Specialized Personalities For All Characters
While the Vamp personality works great to create balanced characters, it is not always the best choice if you want to make specialized characters that do best what their Vocation offers. Below, you can find some of the best personalities for the Hero and all Vocations for more specialized builds.
| Vocation | Recommended Personalities | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Hero | Paragon, Tough Cookie, Wit | Physical Attack, Physical Defense/Tanking, or Spellcasting |
| Warrior | Paragon, Tough Cookie | Physical Attack, Physical Defense/Tanking |
| Martial Artist | Lone Wolf, Tough Cookie | Hard and Fast Hitting (high agility growth) |
| Mage/Priest/Sage | Genius, Wit | Highest Wisdom Growth (Genius) or Balanced Growth (Wit) |
| Thief | Paragon, Tough Cookie | Attack Power or Defense (agility makes physical attack better) |
| Monster Wrangler | Paragon, Wit | Versatility |

Should You Master the Personality System?
While wrapping your head around the Personality system in Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake can feel complicated at the start of the game, remember that you can complete the adventure at any difficulty level using any party composition and with any personality. The system has been devised to give players almost complete control over their characters' growth and should be considered as a bonus mechanic rather than a fundamental one that has to be fully understood to complete the game. So, if you're not aiming to min-max, you can go with any personality and Vocation combination and still have a great time.
