Heart Machine, the studio behind Solar Ash, Hyper Light Drifter, and, more recently, Hyper Light Breaker, has confirmed in a report from Game Developer and in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account that it will layoff an undisclosed number of developers, specifically hitting the Hyper Light Breaker team. Furthermore, the development of Hyper Light Breaker, which is still in early access, is winding down and coming to an end sometime next year.
The studio confirmed that for the remainder of 2025, it will stop pushing updates for Hyper Light Breaker, and instead let the team focus on delivering a final update sometime in January of next year. "We still have something coming in January. We plan to deliver something meaningful and as polished and complete as we can given our current circumstances. We're doing our best to refine what we can, complete key systems, and have the game culminate in a satisfying punctuation point."
It's obviously not an ideal ending point for Hyper Light Breaker, since it doesn't exactly sound like whatever the team releases in January will be the proper v1.0 the studio had envisioned, but according to Heart Machine, this was "the only one available given the circumstances."
"While this path will include a conclusion on the project, it reflects broader forces beyond our control, including shifts in funding, corporate consolidation and the uncertain environment many small studios like us are navigating today."
The studio is still pushing forward with its other projects, namely the coming release of Possessor(s), which is due out on PS5 and PC this coming November 11, 2025. According to the studio, these layoffs have not impacted developers on the Possessor(s) team. However, it feels worth pointing out that when studios make these statements, it feels odd, to say the least.
While they may be true in the technical sense of Possessor(s) team members not losing their jobs, it doesn't mean that the people working on Possessor(s) aren't impacted by the fact that they just lost several of their co-workers and that their studio just had to cut an entire project because of its current struggles.
Hyper Light Breaker originally launched in early access this past January 14, 2025, so it seems like it'll at least make its one-year mark by the time Heart Machine releases what will be its final update. Hopefully, for Heart Machine's sake, Possessor(s) will have a better fate.
