Well before Grand Theft Auto 5 reached its 10-year anniversary, it was clear that Grand Theft Auto 6, whenever it would arrive, would be the biggest video game release, and likely the biggest release for a singular piece of entertainment across all industries, ever. Which is why Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick is more than okay with letting Rockstar take its time, even when admitting that the current release date for GTA 6 puts it about 18 months behind schedule.
In an interview with David Senra, Zelnick admits that GTA 6 is "about 18 months behind the original date...not much more than that," which means we should've already had about 18 months of playing GTA 6, if everything had gone according to the original development plan.
Though it might be frustrating for players to know they should've already been neck-deep in Vice City, Zelnick's comments here really reinforce previous reporting about how a 2025 release for GTA 6 was ultimately an unrealistic release window.
Even when Take-Two publicly confirmed a 2025 release window for the first time back in 2024, there were reports just two months before that speculating that it would slip from an early 2025 release window all the way into 2026. Which, of course, was eventually what happened. And even then, it was delayed further from a May 2026 launch to a November 2026 launch.
But whether it arrived last year, this month, this November, or even next year, Zelnick has made it clear that Rockstar will get as much time as it needs. "The most important thing to do is to support your teams in their search for perfection," Zelnick said in May 2025, even while admitting that delays cause him "pain."
Of course, with billions reportedly spent on making GTA 6, it's not like Take-Two could've afforded to keep it in development forever. Zelnick has also recently been incredibly confident when asked if the game will be delayed yet again, even going so far as to joke about another delay.
Despite rumours that pre-orders were going to open as early as today, we can realistically look towards this summer for more information on GTA 6, ahead of its November launch. For now though, if you're looking to learn even more about the upcoming title, you can find out why the game won't be coming to PC alongside consoles later this year, here.
