As one of the most prevalent operating systems in the world right now, Android continues to receive a lot of limelight, including from its progenitor Google, which has again chosen to dedicate an entire livestream to the OS as a part of its annual I/O event.
This year's Android Show has revealed a fair number of goodies that are coming to Android 17 this summer, including Gemini Intelligence, while giving a teaser of the brand-new Googlebook.
Here are the choice tidbits from Google's latest Android Show I/O edition
Google is now packaging disparate AI services and tools under a single Gemini Intelligence label that syncs across your smartphone, smartwatch, Android Auto, and smart glasses, bringing popular features such as circle to search, build your widgets on the fly, in-app actions, and much more.
Gemini Intelligence also brings multi-modal capabilities, such as the ability to reserve a tour for you and your friends, all based on the snapshot of a holiday brochure.
What's more, Gemini in Chrome will now allow you to automate tasks on the web, porting over Gemini's desktop capabilities to smartphones. These include an enhanced autofill experience that leverages your personal information stored in various niches of your smartphone to make filling forms a relative breeze.
Gemini Intelligence's Rambler turns your natural conversation into an organized text, while deleting filler words and working across multiple languages, including bilingual conversations.
Gemini Intelligence will also support generative UI, where you can create widgets on the fly or combine multiple ones. To get started, just describe your vision in natural language.
What's more, Google has teamed up with Meta to bring an authentic Instagram experience to Android devices, including native support for ultra HD capture and playback, built-in stabilization, night mode, and a very smooth posting experience. Also, Instagram's Edits app will be available exclusively on Android devices. The app leverages AI to enhance old photos and boost desired sounds in videos.
As for Google's big surprise at the end, it's the all-new Googlebook - a laptop that merges Chrome OS and Android, while leveraging Gemini Intelligence at its core. The new OS is multi-modal, brings enhanced cursor functionalities and the ability to build custom widgets, and offers direct access to your phone apps and files. Google has partnered with a number of OEMs, including HP, ASUS, Dell, Lenovo, and Acer, to build Googlebooks, with each device sporting a premium build in what appears to be a nod to Apple's MacBook Neo. Launch is tentatively set for this fall.
And, if you were wondering, all Googlebooks will come with a distinctive light bar on the lid. Last but not least, do note that Google is now expanding compatibility with Apple's AirDrop to more older devices.
