Google is Shutting Down the Google Pay App Later This Year

In the U.S., Google's main app to manage finances and pay contactless is Google Pay and not Google Wallet. It always struck me as an odd choice because the rest of the world is using Google Wallet, but not the people in the U.S. Well, that will change soon as the company has announced the transition.

Say goodbye to Google Pay in the U.S. as the company finally starts transitioning to Google Wallet

Google has announced that it is looking to simplify the payment apps in the U.S., and to ensure this amplification works the way Google intends, the company is shutting down the Google Pay app on 4th June, later this year. The company recommends that you shift over to Google Wallet, which is going to deliver similar features.

To make sure that the users understand what the changes are, Google has outlined some basic things that are going to happen to Google Pay.

  • Managing your balance: Users will be able to continue viewing their balance and transferring funds to their bank account after June 4 by going to the Google Pay website.
  • Offers and deals: Those looking for deals will need to use an alternative option, like the shop deals feature on Search.
  • Peer-to-peer payments: Users won’t be able to send, request, or receive money through the US version of the app after the deadline.

What's strange is that Google has announced that things are not going to change for users in India and Singapore. Both will continue to use Google Pay, and the company will even “continue to build for the unique needs in those countries.”

There is nothing wrong with this transition, to be honest. Google Pay and Google Wallet are two of the same apps, with the latter being something that has become a lot more useful. I have been using the app for almost two weeks now, and for the most part, it works without any issues. It is great when it comes to making payments and storing cards, passes, tickets, IDs, and more. All of this combined makes Wallet the go-to solution for everyone who is looking forward to using a proper and comprehensive payment app.
