Google urging DOJ to not push for breaking up the company

The regulatory authorities have escalated their efforts to discourage anti-competitive practices. Google has been a target of scrutiny for quite some time and has been under immense pressure from the DOJ for its monopolistic practices and its dominance in the search engine market. The U.S. Department of Justice has been onto the tech giant and is looking to break it up as one of the solutions. As Google keeps on advocating its case, it seems that the company is now actively engaging with Trump's DOJ to prevent any potential breakup.

The U.S. Department of Justice has been pursuing Google aggressively and currently has two cases against the tech giant, one over its monopoly in the search engine market and the other over its dominance in the advertising market. To deal with the anti-competitive practice, the department suggested breaking up Chrome and ending agreements that led to the search engine being the default choice. While the trial is to be held in April, the final ruling is said to come out in August that will decide the fate of the company.

As per a Bloomberg report, representatives for Alphabet Inc. met with government officials last week to request a lenient approach and not push for extreme measures such as a potential divestiture of its Chrome browser. When presenting its case, the company's legal team cited concerns regarding national security, user privacy, and harm to the tech industry. This pursuit follows a ruling by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta, who declared the company guilty of violating antitrust laws. While the DOJ weighs the penalties, Google is requesting the authorities to take a less aggressive approach.

During Biden's administration, the DOJ's efforts have been to curb Google's monopoly power and dismantle the structure that has led to its dominance in the market. Now that the Trump administration has taken over, Google is taking its chance by lobbying the DOJ and urging it to reconsider the stringent measures it plans to take.

This is not the first time Google has presented this argument to avoid a potential breakup. It has been pushing back the scrutiny against itself, calling it to cause broader harm by ultimately impacting the end consumers who have to bear this brunt. Regulators have remained skeptical despite Google's arguments in its defense. It is yet to be seen what the final ruling or penalties would be, but the decision could go either way, given how the company is constantly pushing for leniency.
