It's been nearly three years since Netflix announced a Gears of War movie adaptation. Now, though, things are moving faster, following the May confirmation that David Leitch would direct the film.
The American director is known for movies like Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, Bullet Train, and The Fall Guy, all of which are firmly in the action genre. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Leitch's wife and production partner Kelly McCormick briefly touched upon the Gears of War movie, confirming that it won't launch alongside the new game next year.
We’re writing right now with Jon Spaihts, and we’re really excited about it. There’s a lot of energy from Gears of War company The Coalition and from Netflix, because The Coalition is releasing a game in 2026. We won’t hit that release date, but maybe something that feels relevant to the release of the new game. It’s an opportunity for David to do a war film, which he hasn’t gotten to do yet, and a bit of sci-fi in his own way with this beloved IP in his own way.
Ultimately, that's probably going to be a good thing. Forcing a game or a movie to release earlier than intended just to maximize the synergy is a long-discarded tactic in favor of simply producing the best game and movie in the respective timings.
Anyway, fans of the IP are getting Gears of War: Reloaded, an enhanced version of the Ultimate Edition port from 2015, tomorrow, opening up the franchise to PlayStation gamers for the first time. Next year, People Can Fly and The Coalition will release Gears of War: E-Day, a prequel where Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago will have to deal with the chaos of Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde first emerged from the underground of Sera.
