Samsung rarely introduces major camera upgrades to its smartphone lineup, and when discussing the Galaxy S26 family, it appears that the Korean giant’s stance will remain the same. A rumor from a notable reporter states that the selfie camera on all three or four models will remain the same 12MP unit that we have seen for a couple of years, signaling that Apple will be ahead of its rival, at least in one area.
Where Apple has switched to a square selfie camera for added convenience, Samsung will keep its Galaxy S26 series behind the pack with a 12MP sensor arriving for all models
Using Bluesky, WinFuture reporter Roland Quandt mentioned the front-facing camera details below, stating that all Galaxy S26 models will remain consistent in this specification. However, as mentioned above, Samsung hardly makes an effort in this category because the last time the company introduced a selfie camera upgrade was when it launched the Galaxy S23 series.
However, we should not immediately conclude that this hardware will be below our expectations because a 12MP sensor means that still images can be captured at a higher resolution. Additionally, Samsung could bring the following improvements, which might fly under the radar because the majority of buyers often judge a camera's imaging prowess by the megapixel count or other details.
- Bigger sensor size
- Improved lens system
- Wider aperture
- Better stabilization
- More image capture options in manual mode
- Improvements in computational photography and videography techniques
While the aforementioned changes will be welcomed, an actual hardware upgrade can make a ‘day and night’ difference. For instance, Samsung’s Galaxy S26 lineup will eventually go up against Apple’s iPhone 17 series, and with the latter switching to a square selfie camera, it offers more versatility.
In short, users can effortlessly capture landscape photos while holding their phone in a portrait orientation, something that Samsung could look into for future releases. For those who do not remember, Samsung’s 12MP F/2.2 selfie camera has yet to be upgraded from the Galaxy S23 range, and assuming the company wants to continue its cost-cutting strategies, it needs to make improvements in other areas.
