[UPDATE - May 1, 2026] Naoki Yoshida has now confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy XIV will run at 30 frames per second and support the Joy-Con's mouse-like controls.

[ORIGINAL STORY] After Naoki Yoshida told players to "please look forward to Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Switch," today, Square Enix not only revealed the sixth expansion for the game, Evercold, but also finally confirmed that the popular MMO will be making its way to the Nintendo Switch platform with a Nintendo Switch 2 version set for August 2026.

The news was revealed by Yoshida today during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, and you can check out the full keynote from the first day below if you want to see Yoshida take to the stage to announce the new expansion, followed by Square Enix president and chief executive officer Takashi Kiryu closing the presentation out by revealing the Nintendo Switch 2 version.

If you want to skip most of that and just jump to the Evercold trailer, you can check that trailer out below.

While it's exciting to know that players will finally be able to take one of the world's most popular MMOs on the go with the Nintendo Switch 2 version, there is an unfortunate caveat to the news of this new version.

Currently, Final Fantasy XIV requires one subscription to access it across all available platforms. But with the new Switch 2 version, even if you already pay for a subscription to play on PC, PS5, PS4, and Xbox Series, you'll have to pay for a separate subscription just to play on Nintendo Switch 2.

That means if you don't want to be paying for two subscriptions, you'll have to either choose between not playing on Switch 2, or making your Switch 2 your dedicated platform for playing Final Fantasy XIV. It's also worth noting that if you're already a console player, no matter which platform you choose, you already pay for two subscriptions to play Final Fantasy XIV: one for the game, and another for PS Plus/Xbox Game Pass.

The thing that makes it at least a little better is that current player subscribed to Final Fantasy XIV will get a 50% discount when buying a subscription to play on Nintendo Switch 2, and the fact that you'll be able to play it without a Nintendo Switch Online subscription.

For now, details on the new version are scarce, but it would be good if we can eventually reach a point where the second subscription isn't required.

Evercold, meanwhile will feature a level cap increase, two new jobs, new cities, new areas, new constructs to overcome, new trials, dungeons, PvP updates, a new ultimate raid, and a whole lot more. Similarly to the Switch 2 version, we'll have to wait for more details on that as well.
