Fatshark Adds Skitarii Alpha Primus to Warhammer 40,000: Darktide as First Adeptus Mechanicus Class After Years in Development

Three armored characters with glowing eyes and weapons stand in a foggy setting, with the text 'Warhammer 40,000 Darktide Skitarii' displayed prominently.

Today, Fatshark launches the Skitarii Alpha Primus, which becomes the seventh playable class in the game Warhammer 40,000: Darktide alongside the Veteran, Ogryn, Zealot, Psyker, Arbites, and Hive Scum.

It's the game's first representative of the Adeptus Mechanicus faction, too. In a pre-release presentation attended by Wccftech, Fatshark confirmed that the class has been in development since before the Hive Scum release, making it one of the longest-gestating additions to the game.

Fatshark always intended to add an Adeptus Mechanicus presence to Darktide, citing the strong player resonance with existing characters like Tech-Priest Hadron Omega-7-7. A full Tech-Priest was, however, ruled out because Tech-Priests do not typically operate at the strike-team level of Darktide's warband. The Skitarii were also seen as underexplored in video games, presenting an opportunity to collaborate with Games Workshop on a fresh representation.

The class ties directly into existing Warhammer 40,000: Darktide content: players who have been helping Hadron Omega-7-7 recover Tech-Remnants in the Deadside have triggered the in-universe justification, as the success of those missions prompted multiple Forge Worlds to deploy forces to Tertium. Hadron has now located an old Adeptus Mechanicus facility on Atoma capable of upgrading Skitarii Veterans into the more elite Alpha Primus variant.

A Unique Character Creation

The Skitarii required an entirely new body type, as the class's cybernetic nature made the standard human body unsuitable. The character creation takes place inside the inner sanctum of the recovered Adeptus Mechanicus facility. Players begin with a disfigured torso and head suspended in the machine and build their character from there. Because there was little established visual reference for what a Skitarii looks like beneath the robes, Fatshark worked extensively with Games Workshop using written lore, codices, and narrative sources to define this crucial aspect.

Customization options include:

Unique Class Mechanics

The Swedish studio also implemented special mechanics for the Skitarii. Rather than a standard cooldown, the Skitarii's Combat Ability is governed by Capacitance Charges. Having one Charge allows the ability to be used; accumulating multiple Charges empowers it. Charges are generated primarily through killing Basic and Elite enemies, and through specific talent-triggered actions. Most Combat Abilities consume all available Charges on activation, except the Chordclaw Strike.

The default Blitz is an Artificer Servo Skull, a floating companion that shoots enemies and can complete Data Interrogation minigames autonomously. Two additional specialized Servo Skulls can be added through the talent tree:

Players can take both simultaneously if they choose to. The primary Servo Skull is also cosmetically customizable via in-game cosmetics.

There's also a new damage mechanic exclusive to certain Skitarii weapons and talents. When an Arc-capable attack hits an already Electrified enemy, the electricity arcs to the nearest enemy, dealing damage and Electrifying it too, which can chain across an entire group. If the initial target is not yet Electrified, the attack will Electrify them instead, setting up the Arc for follow-up hits. This mechanic supports cross-class teamwork, so a Psyker can Electrify enemies to set up Arc chains for a Skitarii ally.

A Massive Talent Tree

The Skitarii talent tree breaks entirely from the standard top-down layout: it starts at the center and expands outwards in a cog-and-wheel shape. This design was inspired by both the modular nature of the Adeptus Mechanicus and the class's identity as a flexible generalist. Players can even opt to skip Blitz, Combat Ability, or Aura talents entirely if preferred. The tree underwent approximately 15 major iterations during development, according to Fatshark.

The talents are loosely organized around four themes:

A Skitarii's Arsenal

The weapon selection was guided by a balance of lore authenticity, gameplay niche-filling, and synergy with the Arc mechanic. The design and class teams worked in constant communication to ensure weapons and talents supported each other. The new class has access to several exclusive weapons, including:

The Skitarii will also be able to wield various existing Warhammer 40,000: Darktide weapons, and another new shared weapon, the Plasma Gun Mk III, also available for the Veteran class. This weapon shifts focus away from penetration toward devastating explosions that trigger on hitting most enemy types.

Just like the previous classes added to the game post-launch, the Skitarii DLC costs $11.99 across all platforms, while a Deluxe Edition priced at $18.99 adds a Deluxe Class Outfit, Unique Deluxe Servo Skull skin, 6 Deluxe Weapon Skins, and a Deluxe Portrait Frame.

Alongside the Skitarii DLC, Fatshark also launched a free update that adds a new scavenge Expeditions zone that lets Darktide players experience the desolate badlands of Atoma at Dawn for the first time. The patch includes two new enemies (the Scab and Dreg Vanguards), new opportunities, quality-of-life improvements, electrifying environmental hazards, balance changes, and bug fixes.

Lastly, the Heretical Artifacts live event has kicked off: strike teams have been tasked with retrieving these stolen artifacts and returning them to Tertium's clerics. As players gather artifacts, they will be able to select one of two factions to join: the Adherents of Saint Messelina, which will bestow players with an increased coherency radius, alongside boosted attack and movement speed, or the Scourge of the Faithless, which endows players with increased damage, burn damage, and burn duration.
