After the release date announcement at the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, Playground Games also shared 30 minutes of new Fable gameplay footage a few days ago. The video was dedicated to demonstrating the game's simulation layer, but toward the end, the developers also showcased some combat when they switched to "evil hero" behavior.
However, many viewers noticed that the guards did little to counter the player character's mayhem in the farming town of Silverbrook, largely standing aside and being easily picked off by the player. Thankfully, the official X account reassured fans that, as some had surmised, the demo was set to "Story" mode, the easiest difficulty mode available in the Fable reboot.
In this demo, the team played on ‘Story’ difficulty. It's perfect for players who would rather not be chased halfway across the countryside by an overenthusiastic guard. On higher difficulties, the guards are far less polite… and considerably sharper with their swords.
In other words, players will be able to significantly increase the challenge level if they choose to do so. Another aspect of the game that felt too easy was earning money; the player earned 18K gold by crafting a couple of swords in less than a minute of gameplay. Again, though, that was for the purpose of the demo, Playground confirmed:
You’ve spotted a rather generous blacksmith! In the demo, our team sped things up and padded the purse a touch to show the system in action given the time-slot we had. Rest assured, when you arrive in Albion properly, you will have to put in some shifts to earn gold and start purchasing your chosen property!
In other Fable news, the game famously got out of its planned Fall 2026 to dodge Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 6. Playground Games General Manager Ralph Fulton admitted to Gamesradar that there was a little disappointment at first, but ultimately, they saw the benefit of the new February 23, 2027 launch date:
First of all, moving out of that really congested period towards the end of this year, obviously avoiding Grand Theft Auto. And honestly, the thing I love about it now, and the thing I've tried to sell the team on, is going in February, having a much less contested window allows us the opportunity to go out and really make a moment for ourselves, and I think the attention this game deserves.
Granted, February 2027 isn't exactly a blank slate in the calendar of game releases. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is coming out on February 12, Persona 4 Revival on February 18, and Metro 2039 is also slated for February. Moreover, there are additional games, including RPGs, targeting the first quarter. Will Fable be able to stand out for itself in this new release window? Only time will tell.
