Fable has been delayed into February 2027, it was announced today by Xbox ahead of its Xbox Games Showcase as part of Summer Game Fest 2026 on June 7, 2026. After just getting done with bringing Forza Horizon 6 to market, developer Playground Games is getting a little more time to polish up the reboot of the RPG series, though the delay seems to be as much about avoiding Grand Theft Auto 6 as it is about Playground needing the extra time.

A statement from Xbox shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account directly cites the onslaught of major releases hitting the market for the rest of this year, citing some of its own titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Halo: Campaign Evolved, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, before calling out several major third-party games also set to arrive sometime before the end of the year.

Among those include Star Wars: Galactic Racer, Control Resonant, and, of course, GTA 6. It's clearly the game Xbox would want to get some distance from the most, to give Fable as much of a chance to succeed as possible.

"This is year is packed with incredible games for XBOX players to enjoy, from Halo: Campaign Evolved, Gears of War: E-Day and Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 to Control Resonant, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Grand Theft Auto VI," the statement begins. "In order to plan our game launches through the holidays, in a way that works best for players, we're moving Fable to February 2027 so it can have the dedicated moment it deserves. We're excited to be giving players a major new look at Fable, as well as our broader lineup, at Xbox Games Showcase on June 7."

For Playground's part, the studio shared a small statement on the official Fable X (formerly Twitter) account, telling players it knows that this news "stings, but it won't be much longer before you're back in Albion making morally questionable decisions," before also teasing that we'll get to see more of Fable in a little more than a week's time on June 7.

Frankly, it would've been more surprising if Xbox did try to put up Fable against GTA 6. The sensible choice was always to get out of the way, but what's sensible and what's right don't always align. We'll see how it shakes out next year, and hopefully, the upcoming look at Fable during the Xbox Games Showcase caps off with a proper release date.
