Today, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco have announced two significant milestones for the Elden Ring franchise. Shadow of the Erdtree, the first and only expansion to Elden Ring, has surpassed 10 million units sold since its release on June 21, 2024. The multiplayer spin-off Nightreign has also cause to celebrate, having sold over 5 million units since May 30.
Both Elden Ring games received high scores (10 and 9, respectively) on Wccftech when reviewed by Francesco De Meo:
- With open-world fatigue setting in earlier this year due to the many open-world games released in 2024—like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, and the PC versions of Horizon Forbidden West and Ghost of Tsushima—Shadow of the Erdtree's open-world design stands out as a testament to how the Elden Ring experience still surpasses anything else on the market. As such, I believe a perfect score is justified, even with the evident lack of significant innovation and some technical hiccups.
- With its wealth of character customization options and the tension of a ticking clock dictating the fast pace of the experience, Elden Ring Nightreign is an engaging and exhilarating experience that even those with only a passing interest in FromSoftware's games, or those still skeptical about it, should give a chance. Like me, they may find themselves drawn to the Night so deeply that they may never want to leave.
This seems just the beginning for the franchise. Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition will port the game and its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC to the Nintendo Switch 2 platform, opening itself up to a new and eager fanbase. Moreover, after several teases, it was finally confirmed in May that a live-action adaptation of Elden Ring will be handled by Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Annihilation, Devs, Civil War, and Warfare), who will direct and write the film.
