The movie Mortal Kombat II is out in just two days in the United States, and so far, the reception has been much better than that of the previous installment, released in 2021. Early reviews highlight better fights, cooler costumes, nastier fatalities, stronger character dynamics, and the standout performance of new entry Karl Urban as Johnny Cage.
Gamers, however, may be more interested in the future of the gaming franchise. There have been rumors about a new Injustice 3 game from NetherRealm dating all the way back to 2025, and new reports have just rekindled that rumor. Still, Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon told Collider that NetherRealm is "definitely" working on a new Mortal Kombat game.
I wish I could tease something... If I gave it away, I'd probably get in trouble. But we are definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we're definitely doing more as well. There are a lot of pots on the stove, not just with games but with other forms of media too. We've got a lot of great announcements coming.
That's not to say Injustice 3 is not coming. In fact, it may well come first, but the statement confirms that Mortal Kombat is never far from the developers' minds. In the Collider interview, Ed Boon also talked about which guest characters from other franchises he'd like to see in the next entry of the fighting game series.
Well, if you'd have asked me that ten years ago, I probably would have listed the ones we've already done: Rambo, Terminator, RoboCop, Ghostface. A lot of the films we grew up with are just burned into our brains, and it's like a validation when we see Terminator in a Mortal Kombat game. I think there are still a few out there. I would love to see a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat — I think that would be cool, I'm a huge fan of Street Fighter. And DC and Marvel would be a lot of fun too. We had Joker, who was a really dark character, but those universes have so much more to offer.
