The OnePlus 10 Pro started a design language that inspired the OnePlus 11. From that point, the design carried on with the OnePlus 12 as well as the subsequent R-series devices. We were under the impression that this is how things are going to go and that we know how the phones are going to look. A rumor earlier this month started talking about how the OnePlus 13 will have an entirely different design. Now, an early CAD render has appeared, showing how the design looks, and frankly, I have some concerns.
The new OnePlus 13 design shows the sad state of the company
For starters, the leaked OnePlus 13 render, even if it is in the early stages, honestly does not look that appealing. It appears that the company has just taken the most generic camera island design that it could find and decided to make some changes to it. The Hasselblad branding is still there, and it appears that there is a light ring around the primary camera, but I could be wrong. You can have a look at it below:
Honestly, I don't really know what to make of this CAD render. I do not like the design at all. It reminds me of some of the older OnePlus Nord devices with a vertical camera angle. Another interesting thing here is that, for some reason, the Alert Slider is missing from this render, but considering how this is just an early reproduction, things could change going forward.
Moving on from the design, the OnePlus 13 is not going to hold back in terms of specifications. You will get the latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, a 50-megapixel primary camera, an ultrasonic fingerprint reader, and a lot more. The device should go official later this year and will debut in China first, followed by an international release date in early 2024.
Honestly, I don't mind companies changing their design language all the time, but it is not really the right move. Not to forget, the current OnePlus camera island is good — it immediately reminds you that it is a OnePlus phone. But if the OnePlus 13 is going to come with an entirely different design language, then it says a lot about how the company is having a hard time finding its identity.
