Apple's iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro models will be unlike any other iPhone releases we have seen so far, as the company aims to integrate AI on a system level. We have previously reported that Apple is planning to incorporate generative AI into the mix of utilities available on the iPhone, and some of them will be tied exclusively to the iPhone 16 lineup. While the general design language of the devices will remain the same, dummy units of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro reveal what users should be looking forward to.
iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro dummy units highlight the camera layout, new Action and Capture Button on standard models
Purported images of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 dummy units have appeared online, showcasing the design and button layout of the highly anticipated devices. The dummy units bolster most of the past reports and rumors we have heard about the devices, including the new Capture Button and the redesigned camera layout of the iPhone 16.
The images of the iPhone 16 dummy units were posted on Weibo, and upon first look, we can see that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be equipped with bigger displays than the current models of the 'Pro' iPhones. However, the same can not be said about the standard models, as the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are expected to come with the same display sizes.
It can be clearly seen that the iPhone 16 Pro is a little bigger in size compared to the iPhone 15 Pro. This means that the company is marginally changing the size of the chassis this year, which will allow the devices to come with a bigger 6.3-inch display instead of 6.1-inch on the iPhone 15 Pro. It was previously reported that Apple is planning to reduce the size of the bezels further, but the images do not reveal this aspect of the design. In contrast, the iPhone 16 Pro Max will house a 6.9-inch display compared to 6.7-inch on the current iPhone 15 Pro Max, and the dummy units show the difference.
It can also be seen that Apple is planning to bring the Action Button from the 'Pro' lineup to the standard models, as is apparent on the dummy units of the iPhone 16. However, it looks like the Action Button is slightly bigger than the iPhone 15 Pro, and it remains to be seen whether Apple will change the button's size. Other than this, we can also see that the camera layout is arranged vertically instead of diagonally. Apple seems to have reached an impasse in terms of design as it keeps on circling to a design that it introduced with the iPhone X in 2017.
The dummy units of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro also show that all models will rock a new Capture Button below the Side or Power button of the device. The new Capture Button will be available on all four models of the iPhone 16, and it will respond to the device's video-taking capabilities. We are not equipped with the list of features that the button will perform, but so far, we have heard it will be a dedicated button for the camera.
Additionally, you can see that the Capture Button will sit flush instead of protruding outside of the frame, unlike the rest of the buttons. The capacitive nature of the button will allow it to house extended pressure-sensitive functionality similar to a DSLR camera. We will share more information on the subject as soon as further details are available.
