Nearly three years after rumours circled that Disney was looking to establish itself as one of the biggest publishers in the video game industry by acquiring a major publisher, those rumours now circle around Disney and another publisher. Instead of EA in the mouse's acquisition crosshairs, The Verge editor Alex Heath claims that Disney is looking to acquire Fortnite maker Epic Games.

Spotted by VGC, while speaking on The Town with Matt Belloni podcast, while discussing Epic's recent mass layoff of over 1,000 Epic Games employees, Belloni shared that they had heard whispers of Disney looking to purchase Epic Games.

Heath added, "I know for a fact there are senior executives in Disney who want them to buy Epic and are just waiting for that moment. And then there’s others who think it’s a bad idea." Belloni then went further to say that Disney's new chief executive officer, Josh D’Amaro, is "500% behind" Disney's relationship with Epic, which has so far included Disney investing $1.5 billion in Epic Games and the recent integration of Disney theme parks in Fortnite.

The two discussed how Epic would, in many ways, be a natural fit for Disney, and there are a plethora of ways in which Disney could integrate Fortnite into its parks and vice versa, but ultimately, the only person who needs to be convinced it's a good idea is Tim Sweeney. Epic Games is still a private company, with Tim Sweeney still at the helm, with the most voting power. He has to decide to give that up to make a deal like this even possible.

If the mouse is really waiting for the right moment, it does feel like we're approaching it. Epic's layoff last week, the recent increase in V-Buck pricing to "help pay the bills," and its effort to cut $200 million in costs point to a company that might just be ripe for the picking. Again, though, nothing will happen unless Sweeney is convinced.
