Today, Chinese developer Eclipse Glow Games shared a new behind-the-scenes video about their upcoming single player fantasy action/adventure game, Tides of Annihilation.
This video has a decidedly technical focus and reveals the studio's "deep technical partnership" with Unreal Engine maker Epic Games and NVIDIA to greatly improve the game's optimization. The previous footage showcased colossal fights, such as against the Giant Knight, where the frame rate clearly dropped significantly.
With the help of Epic, the developers of Tides of Annihilation created a new hierarchical mounting solution for the Giant Knight's Nanite mesh. Epic also helped analyze performance issues on both the CPU and GPU sides, implementing tighter control over texture maps, logic, and animation to reduce computation costs and subsequently improve the frame rate during this boss fight.
Eclipse Glow Games also collaborated with NVIDIA beyond the already announced DLSS and path tracing integration to achieve a solid gaming experience across multiple platforms. In the future, the developers and NVIDIA will conduct joint optimizations at the driver level, presumably in the lead-up to the game's launch.
The release window still remains under wraps, but the studio confirmed that a "hands-on event" will take place this Summer, and registration will be open to all players. Based on this statement, it sounds like an actual demo players can download at home rather than one available only at events like Gamescom. We might learn more in the coming weeks; Summer Game Fest could be the right venue to announce such an event.
Tides of Annihilation was unveiled during February 2025's State of Play. Its inspiration is rooted in Arthurian legend, with the game set in a post-apocalyptic version of modern London torn apart by an invasion from the mystical realm of Avalon. You play as Gwendolyn, the city's last surviving inhabitant, who is driven by a mission to rescue her sister and uncover the truth behind the otherworldly incursion. Her journey takes her across shattered London and into Avalon itself, where she faces Mordred (the game's central antagonist) and powerful demigods, including the sisters of Morgan le Fay.
Combat revolves around the Dual Frontline Battle System: Gwendolyn fights alongside up to four spectral Knights of the Round Table, each with distinct abilities like air combos, ranged arrows, wide slashes, and dashes. Two knights are active at a time and can be swapped on the fly, with one entering a synchronized partnered state that enhances Gwendolyn's attacks and mobility. Beyond the knights, the game features colossal enemy knights roaming the landscape, like the aforementioned Giant Knight. These are towering boss encounters that players can literally scale and explore. A skill tree and equipment upgrade system support progression, though the developers have described it as lighter than a traditional action RPG.
Tides of Annihilation is currently being developed for PC (it will be available via Steam and Epic Games Store), Xbox Series S|X, and PlayStation 5. It doesn't seem like it would be too advanced for the Nintendo Switch 2 to handle, but that doesn't mean it will be released for Nintendo's console, either.
