The Dimensity 9400 is not going to be MediaTek’s only chipset featuring a CPU cluster comprising just the performance cores. The company is said to be in the middle of launching its non-flagship SoC, the Dimensity 8400. A tipster has now shared the potential configuration of the upcoming silicon, with one of the major differences being that it will lack Cortex-X925 cores.
New rumor claims that the Dimensity 8400’s CPU cluster will only include Cortex-A725 cores, with TSMC’s 4nm process helping to improve efficiency
A traditional 8-core cluster is said to be used for the Dimensity 8400, according to tipster Digital Chat Station, in the ‘1 + 3 + 4’ configuration. Unlike the Dimensity 9400, MediaTek is not expected to employ the powerful Cortex-X925 or any Cortex-X4 cores. Instead, the Dimensity 8400 will rely on Cortex-A725, which directly succeeds the Cortex-A720. The rumor also states that various clock speeds are being tested for the chipset, with the top-end core apparently touting a variable 3.00GHz, followed by the three Cortex-A725 cores operating at 3.00GHz too.
As for the less powerful Cortex-A725 cores, these appear to be running at 2.00GHz. Bear in mind that these frequencies are unconfirmed and are subject to change as MediaTek looks to find a balance between performance and power efficiency. The tipster has mentioned on Weibo that the Dimensity 8400 will feature the same ‘GPU IP’ as the Dimensity 9400, suggesting that it might be equipped with ARM’s Immortalis-G925 but possibly operating at a lower clock speed and sporting fewer GPU cores.
As for how the Dimensity 8400 will keep its thermals in check with such a robust configuration, a previous rumor stated that the SoC would be fabricated on TSMC’s 4nm N4P architecture, which is the same one employed for the Dimensity 9300 and Dimensity 9300+ last year. In case you forgot, MediaTek introduced a performance-only cluster for both the Dimensity 9300 and Dimensity 9300+, with these two sporting a Cortex-X4 as a part of their specifications. In short, anything MediaTek’s previous-generation flagship silicon can handle, the Dimensity 8400 can tame easily as well.
