Despite AM4’s Lower Share, B550 Motherboards Keep Outselling AM5 Models

The AM4 platform has been constantly dominating in the mainstream market, and despite AM5 being the most popular platform, AM4 still has the best-selling chipsets.

AMD B550 Chipset Motherboards Remain the Best-Selling Motherboards in NA and EU Regions

It doesn't surprise us to see AM4 making a comeback since the eye-watering DDR5 RAM prices and expensive AM5/LGA 1851 platform have made building a decently fast computer insanely difficult. While DDR4 prices have been rapidly increasing at almost the same rate as DDR5 RAM kits, the overall cost for DDR4 platforms is still comparatively lower than DDR5 platforms due to several reasons.

AMD's AM4 remains the most popular platform after AM5, and despite making its debut nearly 9 years ago, it has proved itself to be the most upgradeable platform ever made. AMD's Ryzen 5000 CPUs are still doing great on the market, and performance-wise, they are generally considered decent for gaming and productivity workloads. Due to the high sales of AM4-compatible CPUs like Ryzen 5000 and even Ryzen 3000, AM4 motherboards enjoy good sales as well.

Despite Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series being the best-selling CPUs on the market, it's not the AMD B650 or B850 that remain at the top of the charts, but it's the B550 chipset, which is easily outselling both its counterparts from the newer platform in various regions. Take a quick look at the best-selling motherboards on major retailers, and you will mostly see one or two B550 chipset motherboards at the top.

Whether it's Amazon US, Amazon CA, or Amazon UK, the B550 chipset motherboards are the best sellers. Even on popular German retailers like Mindfactory, the B550 motherboards remain the best-selling ones. While the reasons for B550's popularity are many, one of the major and crucial reasons remains affordability. A decent B550 chipset motherboard can be bought for nearly $100-$120, but good luck getting a good B650 or B850 chipset motherboard for such a low price.

On Amazon US, the best seller is ASUS ROG B550-F Gaming WiFi II, which is currently sitting at just $139, while on Amazon Canada and UK, ASUS TUF Gaming B550-Plus WiFi II, and MPG B550 Gaming Plus are the most popular boards. The MPG B550 Gaming Plus is also the best-selling motherboard on Mindfactory, with nearly 55,370 units sold till now, and has sold around 70 units in the last week (via @TechEpiphanyYT). It's followed by MSI B550-A Pro with 40 units, and then we have some B650 and B850 chipset boards that couldn't match the B550's superiority.

I think it's time for AMD to bring back Ryzen 5000X3D CPUs, because the market really needs them. However, we haven't heard any reports regarding these SKUs coming back to the market. Since AMD is already quite dominant with Ryzen 7000 and 9000 CPUs, it may never re-release the Ryzen 5000X3D CPUs again.
