Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was undoubtedly the biggest surprise hit of 2025. The debut game of French studio Sandfall Interactive was so successful that even launching right alongside The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered (also highly successful in its own right) did not hurt it in the least, and now that we get closer to the awards season, the widespread perception is that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 could very well be the most likely candidate to win Game of the Year prizes.

Guillaume Broche's history, as a former Ubisoft employee who left the larger company to pursue his passion project, is well-known at this point, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot to ask the creator of this JRPG. Indeed, YouTuber MrMattyPlays just published a lengthy video chat with Broche, who confirmed in no uncertain terms that Expedition 33 is just the first installment of a franchise of games.

Yeah, so Clair Obscur is a franchise name. Expedition 33 is one of the stories that we want to tell in this franchise. Exactly what it will look like and what the concept will be is still too soon to announce, but what is sure is that this is not the end of the Clair Obscur franchise.

Fans believe that rather than direct sequels, Sandfall could take the route of an anthology-type series. After all, the explicit inspiration for the IP is Square Enix's Final Fantasy; the French team even recently went to Square Enix's offices in Japan for what has been described as a 'creatively rich exchange of ideas.'

While we wait to see what form the future installments of Clair Obscur will take, though, Broche has also teased some post-launch content coming to Expedition 33, saying:

There might be something. We may be cooking.
